Our lives changed on the afternoon of October 9, 2023. The family of Gus Touzin lost their wonderful husband, brother, and friend. Gus passed away peacefully with his family by his side after a brief battle with illness.
Everyone who knew Gus experienced his kindness, stubbornness, loving heart, passion for fishing, boating and gardening, and his dry sense of humor. He was never too busy to help someone out or make sure everyone felt welcomed.
He was born in Nedelec, Quebec, on October 25, 1952, into a large family. His family moved to Haileybury when he was very young, and it is where he settled and met the love of his life, Sandra. Gus enjoyed fishing, spending time in his garden, his annual fishing trip to Lady Evelyn, spending time with his cats, and his involvement in the Haileybury Legion was dear and close to his heart. Gus had a unique talent for finding humor in the every day, and his quick wit is a gift that keeps on giving, brightening the lives of those fortunate enough to have known him. His ability to respond to any situation with his knowledge, expertise and assistance will be greatly missed.
Everything Gus did was completed with purpose, absolute compliance to the rules, and a solid work ethic. Prior to his retirement, he was a natural gas technician with his own business and worked as a natural gas inspector in Ottawa. He took pride in his work – always going above the call of duty with whatever he took on. He made sure everyone followed the guidelines set out by government standards and was respected by colleagues and contractors alike.
Gus was predeceased by his parents, Emilien and Cecile, his sister, Micheline Savard, his brother-in-law Mike Savard, and his sisters-in-law Alice Snider and Christine Bailey: by his dear friend and father figure, Mert Martel. Gus is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Sandra and his beloved fur babies Cleo and Coco; by his brother, Gaetan (Carole) and sisters, Lisette Gauthier (Marcel), Joanne Touzin, and Suzan Cheung (John), his brother-in-law Steven Snider (Deb) and sister-in-law Pam Fowler (Mike Belec). Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Despite the physical distance between Gus and his various family members, he maintained a connection with them ensuring they felt his love from afar. The loss of Gus to his family is immeasurable. In his own gentle and humorous way, he was our leader, our role model, our rock. We can’t imagine life without him and his endless love for each of us.
Gus’ final care has been entrusted to the Buffam Leveille Funeral Home – Haileybury Chapel. Cremation has taken place and there will be a funeral service at the Branch 54 Legion, 373 Broadway Street, Haileybury, ON at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 13th, 2023 with a luncheon to follow.
