Gerrit «Gerry» Carree
1935-2024
With
heavy hearts we announce the passing of Gerrit
«Gerry» Carree from Coldbrook, NS, on Saturday, May
25, 2024. Gerrit passed away peacefully in hospital surrounded by
family and has gone to be with his loving Saviour. Pa struggled with
age-related health issues over the last number of years and his body
needed rest.
He was
born May 8, 1935 in Leiden, Netherlands, son of Gerrit and Maria
Catharina (deBlauw) Carree.
Gerrit
grew up in the Netherlands and started working at a young age on a
dairy farm milking cows by hand. This was interrupted for a time when
he served compulsory service in the Dutch Army. Gerrit and Jozina were
engaged for three years, marrying in 1957, and decided to immigrate to
Canada.
Mom
picked Nova Scotia as it was closest to Holland. Pa worked at several
dairy farms upon arriving in Nova Scotia before going to work at
Michelin Tire in Granton, Pictou County. In 1982, Pa transferred to
Waterville plant in Kings County where home has been ever since. After
retirement from Michelin, Pa did various jobs to occupy his time and
liked keeping up to date on what was going on at Mike and Roberts’
farms. Dairy farming was his passion and he loved seeing how the crops
were growing and witnessing the new technology. He was a proud
Dutchman and the impact the Dutch have had on the dairy industry here
in Nova Scotia and around the world.
Pa was a
faithful member of the Christian Reformed Church for many years where
he volunteered and served in Consistory as a Deacon and Elder and
loved to sing in the choir. Pa and Mom thoroughly enjoyed returning to
Holland for several weeks each spring to rent a cottage and enjoy time
with family and friends. Pa and Mom also loved to tour around Holland
and Pa would also occupy his time singing in the Mannekoor
choir.
He was
predeceased by parents, Gerrit and Maria; sisters, Corrie and Rina;
and brother, Willem.
He
leaves to grieve his wife of almost 67 years Jozina (Verboon);
children, Jerry (Sonya), Dick (Nenita), Martin (Heather), Robert
(Caroline), Michael (Tammy), Wayne (Candy), and Jozina (Diana);
sister, Mieke Carree; grandchildren, Anthony, Sandy,
Christa, Nick, Angela, Derek, Adam, Brittany, Mitch, Josh, Taylor,
Luc, Maria, Katie, Chelsea, Madison, Ryan, Meghan, Alexander, Finn and
Meika; 22 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and brothers
and sisters-in-law.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to
8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 30 in the White Family Funeral Home,
Kentville. The funeral service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday,
May 31 in the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite, 2639 Black Rock
Road, Grafton. Pastor Les Goossen officiating. For those unable to
attend, an audio livestream option is available: listentochurch.com/listen/annapolisvalley#.
A private family interment will be held in Lakeview Cemetery,
Lakeville, prior to the funeral service, Pastor Justin Halbersma
officiating.
Donations in memory may be made to the
Lung Association of NS or the Canadian Red Cross. Funeral
arrangements have been entrusted to the
