Passed away peacefully on July 5th in Ancaster, Ontario at the age of 72 surrounded by family. Lovingly remembered by his wife of 49 years, Cathy (nee Foote) and his children Michael (Sarah) and Carrie (Ilija), grandchildren Wesley and Evelyn, siblings Russell, Carol, Don, Doug, Gary and Brenda. Predeceased by his parents Russell & Gina.
Gerry lived a full and happy life. Born in Hamilton where he lived for his entire life. He was the second youngest sibling and was referred to as the “baby brother”. He attended Westdale high school and then went on to work at Torham Packaging (formerly Atlas Paperboard Box) where he worked for 40+ years. Gerry worked his way up from the assembly line to plant supervisor and knew all the machinery inside and out. Gerry would show up an hour early everyday he went to work. This speaks to Gerry’s work ethic and dedication to all that he did in life. It was there where he met his future bride Cathy while she was working a summer job. After a short courtship, they married in June of 1974. He and Cathy then celebrated the birth of Mike in 1977 and Carrie five years later. Mike and Carrie were Gerry’s world. His ‘Buddy’, and his ‘Baby’. Later came the birth of his two beautiful grandchildren, Wesley and Evelyn. They were the apple of Gerry’s eye. In the later years it was Wesley and Evelyn’s special thing to tell jokes with Grandpa and in turn Grandpa would have his jokes to tell Wesley and Evelyn each visit. Gerry will be deeply missed by many friends and extended family who all knew Gerry as a loving and gentle man.
An extra special thanks to the staff at The Meadows Long Term Care Facility for their continued support and dedicated care over the years, especially in the last few weeks, and for making Gerry feel at home for the last 4 years.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Bay Gardens Funeral Home, 947 Rymal Road East, Hamilton, ON. A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday July 22nd from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Memorial service will begin at 12:00pm. A private family burial service will be arranged for a later date. In lieu of flowers, Donations to Parkinson’s Canada (www.parkinson.ca), or the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA (www.hbspca.com) would be appreciated by the family.
