Gerald Joseph Naugle
June 18, 1927 – December 16, 2024

Gerald Joseph “Papa” Naugle (97) passed away peacefully December 16, 2024 surrounded by
family under the compassionate care of Birch Cove-Glasgow Hall in Dartmouth NS.
Gerald was born June 18, 1927 in Eastern Passage to the late Thomas and Levina (White)
Naugle. He is predeceased by his wife Frances (Lynch) Naugle, sisters; Ellen, Sarah, Muriel,
Ruby, Garnetta, and Alice, Brothers; Daniel, John, William (Glenys), and Thomas (Doris). He is
survived by his sister Shirley, son Robert (Peggy), grandchildren; Daniel (Erin), Shaun (Sarah),
Meagan (Jeff), Jamie (Leah) and Michael as well as great grandchildren; Jaxon, Emersyn, Poppy,
Liam, Joseph, and Jessica.
Gerald spent his early years serving the needs of their family farm which once spanned from
Fisherman’s Cove in Eastern Passage to Cow Bay road. Gerald recalled his favorite early
memories as his mother’s fried eels, going to dances, and skating on the frozen Halifax harbour.
Gerald began his career with Imperial Oil sailing through the Panama Canal with stops in South
and Central America as well as various islands and port cities along the way. He returned to
Nova Scotia to join the Fairey Aviation Company eventually retiring in June 1992 as a civilian
senior trades supervisor with the Department of National Defense. Gerald was an active
member of the community who regularly pledged his time to his local church. Lions Club,
Buffalo Lodge, and Credit Union. He found much to occupy himself in retirement and would
regularly rise before the sun to quietly drink tea and read the newspaper in his favorite chair by
the front window before going to “work” for the day.
Gerald is well known for his kind, generous and gentle presence. He loved to sing, hum and play
guitar alongside his wife Frances and the former “Metro Fiddlers”. Gerald was a dedicated
husband who spent many of his later years caring for his ailing wife, Frances, who suffered from
dementia. They would often perform “all the songs she could still remember” for the members
of Glasgow Hall before passing away in 2015. Gerald was fortunate to remain in his own home
and well-connected with dear family and friends while spending much of his remaining time
with close companion, Marie Rapitta.
Gerald’s family are extremely grateful for the compassion, dignity and respect offered to both
Gerald and Frances by members of Glasgow Hall as both visitors and residents. Special thanks
to Gerald’s dear friend Marie as well as Robert and Peggy who attended to Gerald throughout
his time spent at home, in hospital and as a resident of Glasgow Hall. Also, to Letitia and the
entire staff of Birch Cove, especially Matt, who graciously invited Gerald to perform a few of his
favorite tunes for the crowd several days before peacefully passing. Our hearts are full and
heavy for Papa’s long life well-lived.
A service to honor Gerald will take place in 2025 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Eastern
Passage. Musical accompaniment to be provided by remaining members of the “Metro
Fiddlers” as per Gerald’s wishes. In Lieu of flowers, the Naugle family request that donations be
made to the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia in Gerald and Frances’name.
