Obituary
Gerald (Jerry) Carl Bell
Jerry passed away peacefully, with his daughters by his side, in the early hours of June 22, 2023 in the Swan Valley Hospital. He was 76 years of age.
Jerry was born on December 28th, 1946 to Bert and Mary Bell in his grandma and grandpa Bell’s home near Renwer, MB. He received his education at Deer Path school up to grade 8, then took 3 days of high school and decided it was not for him.In later years, he would be quoted as saying, “I got too smart for school.” At age 13, he began working in the bush with his dad, spending that whole winter alone in the bush camp fending for himself and learning independence. That spring, he left home and struck out on his own. He held various jobs including working at Swan River Royalite Oil for Wilson and Muriel Johnson, mowed lawns, drove a septic tank truck for Bert Gray, farm work and drove Cats for Alex Filuk.
In the spring of ‘64 he went to work for Midwest Diamond Drilling in Northern BC. He returned home to Minitonas for 5 weeks but the BC draw pulled him to Vancouver Island. He returned there for a visit with Walter and Gloria Kutynec and Archie Kutynec and remained there for 11 years. He worked for MacMillan Bloedel Sawmill then in Woods. Jerry later became a logging contractor, owning his own trucks. He did this for many years. His work took him all over Northern Vancouver Island including Port Alberni, Port McNeill, Sointula, and Zeballos.
Jerry married Melody Starr Bergen in the fall of 1967. Together, they had four daughters, all born on Vancouver Island – Patricia Shawn in 1968, Cheryl Dawn in 1971, Kimberly Ann in 1974 and Brandy Sue in 1976. One of the greatest gifts Jerry gave to the family was the wonderful years being the only home with an awesome circus trampoline; Jerry even joined in on that fun!
During his years on the island, he was lucky enough to venture into stock car racing in Port Alberni, BC. He unexpectedly fell into the role of stock car driver when someone didn’t show up. He loved it! The spectacular event that ended this venture was, (as he tells it), when he rolled his car 4-5 times end to end then side to side, during which, at one point, his head came even with the light on the light standard on the infield. He was surprised he lived through it and decided, perhaps, this was not for him.
In 1977 he moved his family back home to Minitonas to work with his Dad and his brother Ron with Bell Logging. Jerry and Ron later started a BEL-LOG Industries fence post business out of Birch River. Thus: “Don’t Shoot the Bull – Fix the Fence” was born. Jerry and Ron were in partnership most of the BEL-LOG years. Later, Jerry took over the business and worked in many communities under contract. During this time, Jerry was extremely proud of heading up a portion of the firefighting ground operations on the Porcupine Mountain fires of 1980.
On September 11, 1993 Jerry married Jean Lucille (Lucille) Patterson at their farm yard in Swan River, where they have remained living together until his passing. Throughout this marriage, he gained two wonderful stepsons, Michael and Bryan Patterson. He loved his farm and wanted to raise chickens and pigs on it, but loved his dogs and cats, and all the wonderful birds, squirrels, and deer friends.
Jerry’s hobbies throughout his life included sponsoring a wagon in the Northwest Roundup chuckwagon races, enjoying the heavy horse pull, talking about stock car racing, learning the art of raising chickens, gardening – including his “in-house greenhouse” i.e. the kitchen, and his wonderfully creative cooking (always a fresh bowl of soup on hand). He loved identifying mushrooms, and Lucille refused to eat any until he had tested them first! He had a love of learning and was continuously reading non-fiction books and researching information. Days before his passing he enjoyed listening to his sister read, Valley of the Birdtail, to him.
Jerry leaves to mourn: his loving wife Lucille, their children Patricia Shawn Bell, Cheryl Dawn Lunding (Blaine), Kimberly Ann Blanchette (Richard), Brandy Sue Hlady-Clavet (Micheal) and their families; Michael Patterson (Shelly), Bryan Patterson and their families; grandchildren Billy Jack and Tegan Lariviere, Bram and Akira Lunding, Sam and Tyson Mosiondz, Dakota and Quinn Hlady, Adeline and Keenan Clavet, Jordana, Carson, Krishelle Patterson, and Megan, Nicholas, Kimberly, and Christian Patterson along with 11 great grandchildren. He also leaves to mourn: his sisters – Trudy Bell-Tulman (Sam), Valerie Marlow (Greg), Cindy Sparkman (Keith), and Julie Bell and their families; nieces and nephews Measha, Rilena, and Meako-Anna Marlow, Jerrid, Tyson and Riley Sparkman, Christine Rawluk, Philip Wright, Jennifer Mault, Jason and Ryan Bell and their families.
Jerry was predeceased by his parents, Bert and Mary Bell, sister Gwen Lyons, brother Ronald Bell and nephew Joseph Lyons.
