It is with deep sadness that we announce Gerry’s passing on October 27, 2023, in his 91st year. Born a high risk preemie on September 16, 1933, with dismal prospects for survival, Gerry made up for lost time multitasking education, sport and business to accomplish a long and productive life with many a tale to tell. Survived by his loving wife Sheila of 36 years and his cat Hayley, Gerry’s parents were Margaret and Melville Edge of Westdale, and he had a brother Ron. Educated in Hamilton, he excelled in academics and sports, (at times given a teacher’s nod to leave class to play golf!).
He graduated from McMaster University where he later enjoyed teaching business, economics and marketing, as well as at Mohawk College.
Gerry’s business acumen began as a youngster building one of Hamilton’s largest paper routes. His adult career included IBM and Xerox, marketing the first contemporary electric typewriters and photocopiers to an appreciative public. Negotiating with domestic and international bankers, he successfully masterminded commemorative coin programs for Montreal’s 1976 Summer Olympics (regularly flying Concord to London and Paris), and for Moscow’s 1980 Summer Olympics, with frequent trips to Russia. For the final decade before retiring, he ran Canada’s inaugural office for the British Royal Mint.
Gerry loved golf. Self taught, he honed incredible trick shots at Churchill Park with his father’s cut down clubs. He was the youngest member to join the Burlington Golf & Country Club at 15 and the oldest when he died 75 years later having won several championships, yet only one hole-in-one!
Highlighting his many diverse interests Gerry lead Westdale Secondary School’s Army Cadet Bugle band and for years played tenor drums with the Royal Hamilton Light Inventory band in military tattoos (Bermuda) and ceremonial events. Never idle, however technical, practical tasks were fun for Gerry, whether designing a complex kitchen, rooftop deck, or wainscotting a house without a miter saw!
An amazing man with a brilliant mind, Gerry was savvy, his advice often sought. He worked hard acquiring property and investments early in life. Above all, he will be remembered for his kindness and generosity by all those whose lives he touched. We would like to extent special thanks to all the doctors, nurses and PSW’s who took such good care of Gerry during the last six+ months at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Margaret’s Place Hospice.
He will be forever missed by family and friends in England, Canada and the States, especially lifelong friend Bob Robinson and close friend Vincent Cappelli.
A funeral service will take place at West Plains United Church, 549 Plains Road West, Burlington at 11 am, Thursday November 16, followed by a reception at the Burlington Golf & Country Club by invitation only from 12 pm to 2 pm.
If desired, memorial donations to Margaret’s Place Hospice, Dundas, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Foundation or the HBSPCA, would be much appreciated.
