In Celebration of
George William Mareczko
February 12, 1953 –
February 3, 2024
Suddenly and unexpectedly, on the morning of Saturday, February 3rd, 2024, George William Mareczko passed peacefully in his sleep. A beloved son, brother, and uncle, he leaves behind family and friends with a legacy of love, compassion, caring, and exemplary service both in Canada and Ukraine.
A native Torontonian, George completed his primary and secondary education within the Toronto Separate School system. He then triple majored (in biochemistry, chemistry, and pharmacology) at the University of Toronto in 1976. Always on the edge of change, George entered the fledgeling field of computing where he eventually taught at Herzing College. In the 1980s, George incorporated a boutique firm ‘Dubno Electronics’ whose focus was to assist small firms in transitioning from paper-based to computerized operations. In the 1990s, George again transitioned into financial services where he eventually became the manager of St. Josaphat’s Credit Union where he remained until his retirement in the late 2000s.
An active volunteer throughout both his working and retired lives, George served on boards that varied from chairing parish councils, supervising international teams that reintroduced credit unions to Ukraine following the collapse of the Soviet Union, and overseeing OCGA charitable fundraising activities for several religious and cultural associations in the Greater Toronto Area.
Throughout his life, George’s passion was travel. With his photographic memory, he could recount his travels throughout North America and Europe so much so that travelling nephews could rely on his guidance in real time whether they were in Rome, Paris, or New York.
George leaves behind his sister Helen and brother-in-law Stephen (Mizzi) and nephews Andrew and Mark, sister Anne (Sochan) and nephew Philip, as well as many extended family members and friends. May his memory be eternal. May he rest in God’s peace.
Visitation will be held at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel (2357 Bloor St. West) on Thursday, February 8, 2024, from 5 to 9 pm with Panakhyda at 8 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Pius X Church (2305 Bloor St. West) on Friday, February 9, 2024 at 10 am. Internment will immediately follow at Park Lawn Cemetery. A Celebration of George’s life will be held at the Old Mill Balmoral Room (21 Old Mill Rd) following internment. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to The Heart & Stroke Foundation, or to your favourite charity.
