George Raymond Pifher, 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital in Toronto on Sunday July 14, 2024.
Predeceased by his wife of 47 years Deanna (Slessor) 2015. Proud father of Marsha and husband Darren Holmes. Loving Grampa to Scott and Erika. Greatly missed by his partner Joan Rainbird with whom he shared the past few years. Forever remembered by nephew Wayne Freethy, wife Michele and children Alex, Daniele and Kate.
George Pifher was born in Sunnidale Township on May 31,1939 to Torance and Violet Pifher (Pilkey), brother Harold and sisters Marjorie and Kay (Freethy) all deceased.
George started his career with Loblaws in the Georgian Bay area, working his way to Assistant Manager. He obtained his real estate licence in 1967, working with Cornfield Real Estate but his passion was the Auction Business. George obtained his licence in 1961 and got straight to work for the next 50 years. His partnership with Jerry Coughlin gave him the experience to set out with his own business Pifher Auction Services Limited. He worked all over Ontario and across Canada. George was a director of the Auctioneer Association of Canada and a founding director of the Auctioneer Association of Ontario. He willingly volunteered for many community events, including the Small Halls Festival, Hospice, various Children’s Charities, Ski Resorts, The Toronto Symphony Orchestra and with the Great Northern Exhibition as President.
Wearing his Stetson hat while pointing his iconic cane, George was always good for a story or a line to keep the sale going, and built a reputation from Collingwood to Coldwater, Penetang to Phelpston, Moonstone to Meaford.
Several of his auctions were drawn by artist Robert G. Kemp. If you were driving, he would point out the many locations of his sales (over 750) and could name all of the people. George was an auctioneer first, entertainer second and could show how successful an auction could be with his well practised banter and humour.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the many doctors, nurses and health care staff for their compassion and professionalism during the last three months.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral. Interment at Stayner Union Cemetery. In memory of George, donations to your local hospice or hospital foundation would be greatly appreciated.
“That’s the end of the sale folks”
