Obituary
After a long courageous battle with cancer, George Osmond passed away peacefully at the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice in Ottawa. He was blessed with 61 incredible years of marriage with the love of his life, Maisie (nee Gaulton). He was the proud father of Michelle (Tim), Ottawa, ON and Lisa (Roger), Elmsdale NS. He adored his grandchildren Katelyn (Alexandre), Maiah and Ryan.
George was pre-deceased by his parents Annie (Kettle) and Thomas as well as his in-laws, Maude, Thomas and Llewelyn. George was the last surviving sibling in his family and he is surely enjoying a reunion with his siblings Dorothy (late Gerardo), Alice (late Arthur), Israel (late Margaret) and David (Annie). He was also pre-deceased by his brothers-in-law Clifford, Steward, Wilson, Ted, Larry, John, Isaac and Will as well as sister-in-law Julia.
In addition to his immediate family, George leaves behind sisters-in-law and their partners: Doreen (Ernest), Joyce (Matthew), Shirley (Charlie), Viola (Jordan), Joan (Bert), Julia, Norma and Elsie. Brothers-in-law Lew (Lynn), Norman and Nelson and sisters-in-law Rena and Margie. He also leaves behind dozens of nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
George was a friend to all. His generous spirit led him to help his friends and neighbours with no expectations of reciprocity. As he spent much of the past 8 years in Ottawa, he took much comfort from the many phone calls and conversations with family and friends. Thanks to all who reached out to him and continued to do so even as his health failed and his recollection of details wasn’t always clear.
We owe a debt of gratitude to Dr. Arleigh McCurdy, the hematologist who not only managed his multiple myeloma, but ensured he received rapid access to other specialists as the need arose. Thanks also to Home and Community Care Ottawa’s case manager and nurses who helped us manage his care at home. Dr. Katerina Spacek was his palliative care physician who ensured that his final days were peaceful and pain-free. To the staff at Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice where he spent his final six days…..there are no words to express our gratitude for not only the excellent nursing care of Dad, but also their kindness and compassion towards our family ensuring that we had everything we needed to spend 24/7 at his side in those final days. And finally, to Dr. Brien Whelen, a fellow Newfoundlander, who was his family doctor in Ottawa and cared for Dad like he was family.
Respecting his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive family and friends on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at East Haven Funeral Home from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. Funeral at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Grand Bay, on Friday, May 26 at 2pm. Internment will be at St. Paul’s cemetery, TCH. “That man is a success – who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children, who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who leaves the world better than he found it, who has never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it, who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had”.
