Passed peacefully away at the Burin Peninsula Health Care Center on Friday June 2nd, 2023, with his loving family by his side, George Miller Price of Fortune, at the age of 86 years. Leaving to mourn, son David Barnes (Jessie) and daughter Lorraine Snook (Jullien) of Fortune, grandchildren Mark (Melissa), Jonathan, Travis (Christina), Veronica (Damien), great grandchildren Jack, Nevaeh, Faith, Jaxson, Sophia, sister in-law, Ruby Lake (Cecil), special Homecare worker of 19 years, Linda Brushett and her husband Gary, who treated him like one of their family, and a large circle of family and friends.
Predeceased by wife Ida, parents Alec and Nina Price, and sisters Mary Thornhill and Melita Mavin, parents in-law, Onslow and Rebecca Barnes.
George was born on Brunette Island. His family moved to Grand Bank when he was a very young child. He met and married the love of his life Ida Barnes, and they raised their family in Fortune.
Throughout his lifetime, George found joy in the simple things. In the early years he worked with the RCMP doing guard duty and typing reports. During this time of his life, he became involved with the Boy Scout Movement. As Scout Master he spent many hours with his scout troops, taking them on many adventures and preparing them with wilderness training. He enjoyed every minute of it and would reminisce of those days often.
Later in life, George became a member of the PTA, and in the year 1982 he co-founded the Gran-For-Line Association. He spent countless hours attending meetings and educating the public on Inclusion and how important it is. George believed that all children mattered!
On his days off from working as a Security Guard with Fishery Products International, George could be found beachcombing. He spent endless hours walking up and down the beach searching for inspiration for his next little building projects. He found many treasures there and would bring them home and create countless model boats and airplanes, one of which included a wooden model Aircraft Carrier which ended up being too large to remove from the room in which he had built it. The ship included lights, a crew and even small model aircraft, which he built by hand. He was also an avid kite builder and would build one for any neighborhood children who may want one. George had a meticulous eye for detail, which is evident in the countless plastic model kits that he had assembled right up until a few years ago. They were all proudly displayed at his home.
Anyone who knew George would tell you that he was an avid reader and storyteller. He enjoyed many discussions on history and Newfoundland Culture and he enjoyed entertaining people with his witty humor. There was never a dull moment when he was around because he would have everyone laughing.
George loved wholeheartedly. Being with his family brought him such immense joy. He spent countless hours with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His face would light up when they visited. They have made so many memories together and his love and big personality will live on through them.
In keeping with George’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a grave side service will take place on Saturday, June 10th, 2023, at 11:00 am at the All Saint’s Anglican Cemetery in Fortune, NL. No flowers by request.
