Gauthier, George
George passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, on the morning of August 7, 2024, at Sunnybrook Veterans Centre, Toronto.
Born in Edmonton, Alberta on April 19, 1926, he was raised in Jasper and Edmonton. The fourth of six, Dad would tell us stories of working a newspaper route so he could go the local diner to buy himself liver and onions! He joined the Royal Canadian Air Cadets in Edmonton in 1942, then enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1944. After the war he completed a BSc in Electrical Engineering at the University of Alberta. While there he joined the Royal Canadian Naval Reserve (University Naval Training Division) and spent his summers on various navy ships.
In 1951, after graduation, Dad moved to Hamilton, Ontario for what started as a job, but ended as a 38-year career with Westinghouse Canada as a Professional Engineer. He retired in 1989.
George met the love of his life, Dorothy Halloran, shortly after moving to Hamilton at a Newman Dance and they married in October 1952. Nine years later they had seven children and a very lively household. Dad went to work early but was home for dinner every night. He taught us so many things over the years but most significantly the importance of family and the value of lifelong learning. Over the years, Dad excelled as a gardener, a winemaker, and a painter, and tried his hand at a myriad of other hobbies including camping, travelling through the UK, Europe and North America, learning French, playing the guitar, searching for finds at auctions, and finds at the beach with a metal detector. As the years went on, his interest in computers grew. He assembled them and was constantly trying new applications or researching and documenting our family history.
George was predeceased by his beloved wife, Dorothy (nee Halloran). He is survived by his children Mary Margaret Beveridge (Gary), Michele Mayer (Miles, predeceased), Teresa Gauthier (Joseph Rusinko, predeceased), Dan Gauthier, Gerard Gauthier (Jane Anders), Cathy Ludlow (Lawrence) and Anne Saftich, twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
On behalf of George and the family, we extend our thanks to the daily caregivers in Hamilton who were in his home for a couple of years and to the staff of Sunnybrook Veterans Centre on the LFSE and LGSE wards as well as to his personal caregivers who spent every afternoon with him.
A funeral Mass with be held at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 50 Brucedale Ave. E., Hamilton, on Wednesday, August 28 at 11 AM. Internment will immediately follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, 254 Garner St. W., Ancaster.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Neighbour to Neighbour Centre or your charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.
