On February 2, 2023 in his 89th year Firman died peacefully in his home with family around him. Firman was a proud Maritimer who was born in his grandparents’ living room in Truro, to the late William Wilkinson “Wicks” and Hazel Mary (nee Crowe). He was the beloved husband and best friend of Nancy Lee (nee Roberts) for the last 66 years. A proud father to Paul (Zena) Lee Anne (Don) Heath, and Craig (Jennifer). Grandfather to James, Javed, Charlie, Saara, Cameron, and Emma Lee. Firman’s greatest pleasure in life, especially in later years especially, was the many summers spent at the family cottage in Ingonish where he would sit on the dock and watch his grandchildren playing in the waves or painting the rocks with the dogs running around and lobster suppers at Lee Anne and Don’s. Firman was close to his nephew Dougie and wife Ann. Also Uncle to David, Donna, Daniel and Mike Roberts. He is predeceased by his brother Douglas (late Mary), nephew Darren and brother in law, Charles “Morley” Roberts. Firman and Nancy met while attending Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick where he earned his B. of Education and B. of Commerce. Firman continued his relationship with Mount Allison as a member of the Board of Regents and was awarded the Charles Frederick Allison Medal. His two sons, nephews and granddaughter Alia followed in his footsteps by attending Mt. A. Firman and Nancy became sweethearts while studying at Mt. Allison. They were married in the spring of 1957 a few days after Firman graduated. A short time later this pair of adventurous maritimers boarded a train to “upper canada” where Firman began his first job in personnel at the CIL plant in Hamilton. Firman then moved from Imperial Tobacco and the City of Burlington to accept an offer in 1964 in Sarnia from Polymar, later renamed Polysar, a crown corporation whose rubber operations by 1983 were the largest “in the free world”. No doubt Firman played his part in building this Canadian multinational company which had such a critical role in postwar Canadian economy that it was featured on the 10 dollar bill. In 1971 Firman and Nancy moved with their three young children to Antwerp where Firman was to be General Manager of the Antwerp operations with the added challenge of building a new plant. Then to Brussels as Group Vice President of European operations. During these years the family travelled extensively throughout Europe. The trips to East and West Berlin and Moscow and Leningrad, Russia during the communist era were of particular interest. Firman and family returned home to Sarnia as he took up responsibilities as group vice president for North and South America. He was pleased to be appointed to the Federal Advisory Committee on Free Trade which led to him escorting Brian Mulroney on a tour of Polysar, as well as sector Chairman of the Canadian Chemical Committee. He was awarded the Canada Medal of the Chemical Society, presented by Michael Wilson. His career at Polysar culminated in his appointment as senior Vice President of Nova and president of Petrosar and Petrochemicals. After leaving Nova he began his consulting company, Adamac, named after one of the ships built by his grandfather G.E. Bentley and great uncle T.K Bentley who were shipbuilders and Master Mariners. In the community he was involved with many different organizations. For many years he sat on the Board of Steeves and Rozema. Firman was also the Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO for the Bluewater Power Group of Companies for twenty years well in to his 80’s. “In this role he provided outstanding leadership and shaped the corporation with his wisdom, kindness and compassion. Bluewater Power was his second family. The extra shine on the trucks this week will be for him” said his dear friend and President of Bluewater, Janice McMichael-Dennis. He was a Board member of Lambton College, the International Symphony and Ontario Sustainable Development Committee. Firman took great pride in his work and will be forever remembered for his dedication and commitment to the betterment of all the companies he served. As a devoted Blue Jays fan, an avid student of history, politics and his lengthy business career, he was a great conversationalist and always had advice to give. His larger than life presence, kindness and wisdom will be missed by all who knew him. Cremation has taken place. Burial will be in the Ingonish United Church cemetery. A gathering of friends and family will be announced at a later date. His family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the Personal Support Workers and Nurses. Please consider a donation to VON or Mt Allison University, for those who wish to plant a tree in his memory please visit www.scrca.on.ca.
