With heartfelt sadness we announce the peaceful passing of George Churchill Ferneyhough, age 81, beloved husband, father grandfather, brother and friend, on Monday, June 12, 2023 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines on June 23, 1941, he was the son of the late William and Nora (Bragg) Ferneyhough Morris and also stepfather Joseph Morris. George was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church in North Sydney.
George was a barber for 48 years, the majority of which were spent on Commercial Street in North Sydney. His barber shop was frequented by many, both those coming for haircuts, and those who popped in just to shoot the breeze. He thoroughly enjoyed chatting with his clients and friends as well as meeting new people.
George was a member of the North Sydney Pensioner’s Club. He enjoyed going to dances with his wife Patsy, camping at Joyful Journey’s campground in St. Ann’s, and spending time with friends and family. He appreciated antiques and enjoyed reminiscing about old times. He was a hard worker and liked to keep busy doing things around the house. In later years after moving to an apartment, he enjoyed spending time with Troy and his grandsons at their house puttering around, washing cars or working on household projects.
George lived with Parkinson’s disease for the last several years. It challenged him greatly as the disease progressed and he lost more and more of his mobility. The last few years were extremely difficult, but he amazed us all with his sheer determination to keep doing as much as he could.
George is survived by his wife Patsy (Walsh) Ferneyhough; son, Troy Ferneyhough (Heather), Sydney Mines; and his three grandsons, Adam, Ryan and Matthew. He is also survived by his sister Rhea (Ben) Long, North Sydney and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, George was predeceased by his brother Raymond Ferneyhough and sister Eva Morris.
We would like to extend our gratitude to those who cared for George and were so good to him. Many thanks to Jackie MacDonald, Dr. Patrick O’Grady, the staff of 4 West at Northside General Hospital, and to all our friends and family who checked in, helped out and provided support. We appreciate you all.
A funeral service for George will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Jackie Warren officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
