George C. Steeves
1942-2024
George Steeves 81, of Dawson Settlement, New Brunswick,
passed away unexpectedly on October 19, 2024 while attending his
favourite past time, a Field Trial with his Beagle Hounds, in Halifax,
NS.
He was born in Riverside, New Brunswick on October 20,1942 to
the late Marion (Tucker) Copp and the late Garnet Steeves. He was the
youngest of their three boys.
George spent his early years around the lumber camps, where
his mother was a cook for Clark Milton, who assisted in raising
George.
George married Myra Steeves at a young age and made the tough
decision to leave Albert County for Ontario in 1959, in search of
work. While in Ontario, he found his passion for real
estate. He loved the venture of buying a house, refinishing
it for resale, or residence.
In 1971, George was introduced to the sport of CKC Field
Trials for Beagle Hounds and along with his son Greg, they would build
a very successful kennel. To date, they have finished 69 Champions.
Around 1980, George would become a Trial judge and judged trials
across Canada and the USA. In 2011, he was inducted into the LPH
Beagling Hall of Fame.
After the passing of Myra in 1996, George moved back to New
Brunswick where he married Margaret Weir, in 2000. They enjoyed the
home they had built together until Margaret passed in 2017.
In the last few years, George was grateful for the companionship of
Gayle Steeves of Hillsborough.
When not away at trials, George would be at home or out on
one of his ATVs. George has left many stories and memories
with family and friends far and wide, to cherish.
He will be deeply missed by his daughter, Debbie (Simon)
Turner of Huntsville, Ontario, son, Greg (Wendy) of Cameron, Ontario,
daughter, Cathy (Mitchell Weir) of Colpitt’s Settlement, and
step-son Craig (Denise)Weir of Riverview: his grandchildren Clark
(Amanda) Steeves, Kelly (Justin) Kielly, Alex Turner and
step-grandsons Thomas and Ethan Weir and four great grandchildren
Kaleb and Brooke Steeves and Lucy and Beatrice Kielly.
Left to mourn, are sister-in-laws Anna Murray, Melda
Rossiter, Lynn Steeves, Gerry Stannard, and brother-in-law, Victor
Stevens, along with Margaret’s family Monica and Earl
Rossiter, Donna Stuart and Tommy and Nancy McNaught. He will
be missed by many, many nieces, nephews and cousins. With his parents,
he was also predeceased by his first wife Myra Steeves, second wife
Margaret Weir, brothers Maurice Steeves and Allen
Steeves.
He will be resting at the Albert County Funeral Home with
visitation on Tuesday evening, October 29th, 2024 from 7-9pm and
Funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Wednesday,
October 30th, 2024.
In Lieu of flowers, donations to Cancer Research or Sick Kids
Hospital, Toronto would be appreciated.
