Obituary For George Barnes Simpson
George Barnes Simpson passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the age of 94 years. He was a lifelong resident of Grande Prairie, AB.
George was born in Grande Prairie on February 13, 1930. He was the first child of Georgina and Wes Simpson. A sister, Jean, arrived a few years later, completing the family. George attended school in Grande Prairie until leaving home to attend university. This was cut short when his father passed away and he came home to help with the family business. After returning to Grande Prairie, he met a young teacher from Manitoba whom he married in 1956. In 1961 George and Margaret welcomed a son, Mark, into their lives, followed by a daughter, Sheila, in 1963. After closing the family store a few years later, George sold real estate, cars, and RVs. He also worked as a project/building manager for the provincial government and the brand-new 214 Place in Grande Prairie, amid his varied sales endeavours. In his later years he even had a stint as a hot-shot driver. After Margaret passed away, George met Millie, with whom he spent several happy years, staying close to home and enjoying time with family and friends.
The family enjoyed camping, primarily at Sturgeon Lake. They did some travelling including trips to visit family in Manitoba and Ontario as well as adventures to Alaska, California, and Arizona. In their retirement, George and Margaret continued travelling, spending several winter seasons comfortably in Arizona.
Above all else, George was a devoted family man, caring and supportive and involved – attending concerts, recitals, and sporting events and providing chauffeur services to various lessons and practices. George was a long-time amateur radio operator, spending many hours over the years making contacts around the world, while also being very involved with the local club and their various activities. George was also an avid aircraft enthusiast. He held a pilots’ license for some time, and making a trip to the airport after church on Sunday was a regular occurrence – just to see what was new and occasionally go up for a spin.
George will be missed dearly by his children: Mark (Wendy), and Sheila (Chris); grandsons: Andrew, Jeffrey, and Douglas; his step-granddaughters: Carly, Sarah, and Andrea; sister-in-law Jean (Peter); brother-in-law Vernon; and several nieces and nephews.
George was predeceased by his wife Margaret, sister Jean, brother-in-law Wendlin, sister-in-law Marion, and nephew Paul.
At George’s request, there will be no formal funeral service.
A Celebration of Life luncheon for fellowship and remembrance will take place on Saturday, June 08, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Oliver’s Funeral Home in Grande Prairie (10005 – 107 Ave). George’s ashes will be interred at the Grande Prairie Cemetery in a private family ceremony.
