We are deeply saddened by the passing of Geoffrey (Geoff) Nimmo, born February 14, 1949. Geoff battled ALS and passed peacefully at home with his family on February 22nd, 2024. Geoff is survived by his wife Heather, and two daughters, Victoria and Amanda, who all miss him deeply.
Geoff was born in Duncan, BC to Pen and Dick, and grew up in Saltair on Vancouver Island. He fondly remembered spending summers in the water and on the beach with his two sisters, Judy (Erin, Michael) and Janice (Nancy), and his Nimmo cousins (Jim, Lynn, Heather, Ian). He began his extensive traveling at the age of 18, traveling by boat to New Zealand, and from there going across Oceania, Africa, and Europe for the better part of seven years. He returned and began his studies at the University of Victoria, working summers at the mill in Chemainus. He continued his studies by doing his Masters of Political Sciences at Carleton University, and lived in Ottawa from then onwards. He was introduced to his deeply loved future wife on a Toastmasters river cruise in the summer of 1985, and they married at the Ottawa New Edinburgh Tennis and Sailing Club riverhouse in July of 1988. They welcomed their first daughter in 1990, and second in 1993. A staple of family life was frequent time spent with the Ottawa family (Kathy, Ron, Nicole, Mary, Alex). Geoff was a phenomenal father, and the girls are fortunate to have so many cherished memories with him, notably the weekly Sunday morning outings to museums and movies that spanned their childhood. The family travelled extensively together, most recently a trip together in Norway, and he fostered in the girls a strong sense of independence and adventure, encouraging them to live and travel to a wide variety of locales.
A consistent theme over his life was a strong devotion to giving back to his community, when he “retired” in July of 2023 from the Distress Center he was one of the longest serving volunteers, having begun in the early 1990s. In more recent years he was also an avid volunteer at the Roger Neilson House, which he greatly enjoyed.
A celebration of life will be held in the Spring/Summer. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the ALS Society, the Distress Center, or the Roger Nielson House.
We love you always Dad.
