It is with deep sadness that the family of Gary Thomas Fox, 72, of First South, announce his sudden passing on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at home. Born on August 11, 1951, in Bridgewater, NS, Gary was the beloved son of the late Robert Fox and Evelyn (Mahaney) Fox.
Gary spent his life by the sea, a testament to his enduring love for maritime life. He began his adventures on the survey vessel R/V Vema, travelling the world from a young age. Upon his return to Lunenburg, Gary joined the scallop fleet of Scotia Trawlers and spent several years as a scallop fisherman. He continued to further his education while working at Scotia Trawlers, and he went on to earn his fishing vessel masters and Bridge Watchman’s ticket. This led him to the wheelhouse, and eventually to Highliner on the Cape Beaver and then to Clearwater Seafoods.
After retiring from scalloping in his early fifties, Gary’s passion for the sea never waned. He joined a local salmon farm in Blandford and harvested salmon for three years before working with local lobster fishermen. In recent years, even as his body needed a break from the hard work, Gary’s love for the sea persisted. He channeled his expertise into making trawl lines and nets for local fishermen, a labor of love that kept him busy until his final day.
Gary was also a dedicated community volunteer. He served as a committee member of the Canadian Dory Racing Association and was an avid supporter of the International Dory Races, traveling to Gloucester, Massachusetts every year as an integral part of the committee. A devoted Legion member, Gary recently served as Legion president and received the Lifetime Membership award for outstanding service to the Royal Canadian Legion, Lunenburg, Branch 23. Additionally, he was honored with the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee medal for his community volunteer service.
Known for his humor, willingness to help, and hardworking mindset, Gary was loved by all who knew him. He enjoyed spending time at home in his building, always immersed in a project, whether woodworking, fishing-related, or fixing and rebuilding things for his dearly loved grandchildren.
Gary is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Susan; his children Robert (Shannon) and Nicole (Billy Sewell); his grandchildren Kaylee, Caden, Casey, and William; his sister, Gail (Tom Hayes); brother-in-law David Spindler (Brenda); sisters-in-law Linda Surette (Alan) and Annette Wentzell (Alan), as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by both of his parents.
Gary’s legacy of love, dedication, and community service will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit will forever remain a guiding light for his family and friends.
