Gary Topolinski fought and, with amazing courage and strength, endured three years and seven months of illness. His final wish was to be pain free, at peace, and he is now.
A family man and intensely loving husband, an enthusiast of outdoor pursuits and adventure, a leader in his profession, Gary is and will be greatly missed by his family and vast social network of friends and colleagues.
Mourning his loss are: his wife, Monique [stepchildren: Steve (Melanie and child, Oksana) and Danny (Renée and children, Jérôme and Thomas)], children: Aaron (Nicole and children, Ryder and Toryn) and Mark (Nancy); siblings: Karen (and child, Brenna), Darlene (Brad and stepchildren, Karli and Breanne), Sharon (Trevor and children, Ryan, Devon and Megan), and Lara (David). He will also be missed by numerous other relatives and friends. Gary was predeceased by his parents, Nelson Topolinski and Claudette Pilon (McCann).
Until his later teen years, Gary lived and was raised in the close-knit mining community of Onaping, Ontario, where he grew to love the outdoors and made many close friendships that have lasted to this day.
After moving to Saskatchewan and working at the Allan Potash Mine in the late 1970s, Gary was involved in a serious mining accident that was the catalyst for a new career direction, starting with his electrician certification. He then moved to Alberta where he began and completed his power engineering studies among other technical designations. Not only did he excel in his studies, but it was also no surprise to anyone that he created and sustained many life-lasting friendships during this time. Gary’s new career path was a perfect fit for his aptitude and talents, dedicating his work in the oil and gas sector. Gary was employed by several companies in various locations throughout Alberta, until he began working with global oil and gas firm, Wintershall, with whom he worked for 13 years while residing in the Sudbury area, with regular work stints oversees in Libya. He later accepted a position with Cenovus Energy and he and Monique moved to Cold Lake, Alberta, after which he was promoted and ended his career as Director, Maintenance and Reliability with Cenovus in Calgary.
Gary and Monique’s love for each other was undeniably strong. Gary and his «sweetie» would have celebrated 20 years of marriage in November 2024. They celebrated life together, often on road trips riding their Harley Davidson, fishing in their favourite northern lakes across the country, or spending quality time hosting family and friends. From Grande Prairie they moved as Gary’s career advanced, all the while continuing to make a welcoming home wherever they lived. Gary’s family was thrilled when he took the opportunity to move back to the Sudbury area where they were able to reconnect with family and old friends. During this time, he and Monique entertained at their beautiful lakefront home on Lake Wanapitei, enjoying barbeques and time on the water, and creating so many lasting and joyous memories. When they eventually made their way back to Alberta, Gary reconnected with old friends, including those from his days in trade school. On their Calgary-area acreage, Gary and Monique often welcomed and entertained friends and family, generating memories and comical stories that will endure. All who spent time with him will fondly remember Gary’s late-night barbeques and how when Monique asked how much longer it would be before it was ready, he would repeatedly reply, “just another 15 minutes,” and then pour everyone another drink.
Gary’s love for outdoor pursuits never waned. Throughout his adult life he enjoyed boating, fishing, riding his Harley, snowmobiling, hunting, and spending time with friends and family in the great outdoors. He was always planning ahead and loved to create remodeling ideas to make home life more comfortable for him and Monique. He had an immense love for all his pets, with a particular connection with Barlow, his faithful canine companion who left his side in 2019.
Monique and the family wish to express their gratitude for the healthcare Gary received from his healthcare professionals and the medical team at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre during these past three years and seven months; and especially the exceptional care given to him while in the High River General Hospital leading up to his passing.
Gary did not want a funeral; however, a celebration of life is being planned. Once the date and location have been determined, an announcement will be shared.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to multiple myeloma research (myeloma.ca).
