Garvie Richard Morash – Indian Harbour
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son, brother, husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather (papa) and great-grandfather, affectionately known as “Jake” on January 13th at home with his loving family by his side after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Born on May 31st, 1946 in Halifax, he was the son of the late Thomas and Doris (Boutilier) Morash.
He married the love of his life, Janet, at the young age of 17 and they built a beautiful life together on his homestead in Indian Harbour. They would’ve been celebrating their 60th anniversary on February 15th. They had two sons who were his best friends. His three grandchildren and great-grandchild were his pride and joy. He was so proud of them and beamed with pride of all their accomplishments. Their grandparents love was something the grandchildren strived to find.
He is survive by his loving wife, Janet, sons Danny (Tammie), Graham (Lisa), Grandchildren, Cory (Heather), Ashley (Maeve), Megan (Brandon) and great-granddaughter Allie Mae. Brothers Mervin (Jaine), Barrie (Diane), sister Ruby and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his mother-in-law Thelma McKinnon, sister-in-law Nancie Shackleton, brother-in-law Terry Allen, brother-in-law Ronald Publicover and niece Krista Zinck.
Garvie spent 33 years driving the school bus for Halifax Regional School Board until he retired. During this time he also mackerel fished part-time for numerous years with his brother-in-law Ronald (Popeye). He then worked with Ryer’s Lobster Pound where he continued until this past December.
He spent many days, nights and weekends in the rink or at the baseball field while his two boys were growing up.
He loved golfing, especially with his two sons and grandchildren, Cory and Ashley. Although, Megan wasn’t into golf, he loved spending time with her, especially sitting on the deck with a cup of coffee. He would always look forward to every February for the trip to Montreal with the “boys” to see the Montreal Canadians play. One of his favourite things was driving. You would often see him driving up the Peggy’s Cove Road for a Tim Horton’s coffee, especially in the evenings with his son, Graham and his son Danny, when he was home for a visit.
Garvie was one of a kind. It is really hard to put the kind of man he was into words. He was hardworking, loving, patient, and the best husband, father, father-in-law, and papa anyone could ask for. He is, and always will be, forever loved and missed by all he leaves behind. In his final days, he told us to always remember the good times and emphasized he had a good life.
Special thank you to Dr. Neil Dutoit, Palliative Care and the VON team for their wonderful care and compassion during this difficult time.
A very special thank you to his “personal nurse” and granddaughter, Megan, who cared for him and kept him comfortable during his final days. We are forever grateful to Megan and Janet to have been able to honor his wish to keep him home.
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has already taken place. Funeral and Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Tasa Minor Hockey Association either by email transfer (etransfer@tasa.ca)
or by mail to 12 Westwood Boulevard, Upper Tantallon, NS B3Z 1H3.
