The Ballad of Garrett Mackenzie Hamilton aka Gar The Bargarian: A Tavern’s Lament
(As told by his father)
In the heart of the King’s Towne, a bustling tavern welcomed adventurers seeking refuge from their quests. Amidst the warmth and laughter, Garrett Mackenzie Hamilton , the sweetest harmony and youngest son of Theresia Hamilton (nee VanKoppen) and Joseph Hamilton, and a Bard of charm and melody, graced the stage with tales woven through guitar strings and synthesizer tunes. Born on March 4, 2001, his music painted a canvas of joy and innocence, etching memories cherished by his family and friends.
The ambiance echoed with Garrett’s enchanting tunes, accompanied by his beloved siblings Holly, Liam, and Elgin. The tapestry of shared moments extended to his Grandma Judy (Alex), Grandpa Richard, Oma Theresia, and Opa Bill, all who he adored. He extolled his godparents, Kathy & Billy, and Aunt Julie & Uncle Dave, and all his uncles, aunts and cousins, especially lifelong travelling companions Calvin and Harry.
Garrett, a master storyteller, a skilled improv performer, and a seasoned Not So Amature Amaturers actor, sparked the imaginations of all his companions at the Bardic School of Regiopolis Notre Dame where he dreamt of finding the great treasure of his first true love, and of taking Nursing at Saint Lawrence College.
Within the laughter and stories of the night, Garrett’s melodies resonated with the highs and lows of his life—a life adorned with questing in the deep woods, living in a converted travelling coruswagon, and traversing raging rivers using his white-water canoe certification from Outdoor Pursuits. His dedication transcended the physical, forging a Discord group to maintain the bonds of friendship and the enduring camaraderie of his high school friends.
As the night unfolded in shared merriment, Garrett’s creativity, manifested in written poetry and musical compositions, hearkened back to his Grade 8 Valedictorian speech, earning him a victory in a speech competition. His generosity, kindness, and patience became legendary, especially during family gatherings and at his quaint dwelling at Rise, where he found solace, support, inspiration, and a source of guacamole, and at One Roof, where he found a seemingly infinite source of pancakes.
By the end of the whole evening, his parents rose to thank God for the gift of our talented bard who had inspired and united all in attendance to find someone to give an Uber Hug to – or to get one from; and to celebrate the life of the heroic and beloved bard himself Garr the Bargarrian – Garrett Mackenzie Hamilton.
Garrett’s family hope to address the very real world struggles of youth homelessness, addiction, and mental illness and to remove all stigma from those affected. Garrett acquired Schizophrenia just after high school and was learning to cope and to reclaim the peace and innocent wonder of his childhood. Although his adventure ended (by far) much too early, he had hope based in his connection with his family and David, Jennifer, and Dr Habib, at the Hotel Dieu Hospital Heads Up Team as well as Sara, and Amanda, and Danielle and the many many other supporters at Youth Services Home Based Housing Kingston. The family is so grateful to each.
