Frederic Watson Corey, Fred, to all who knew and loved him, has laid down his gardening tools for the last time on June 22, 2023. His 2023 garden is unfinished.
Fred was a life-long avid gardener. His garden was rarely weed-free, but there were always abundant crops of raspberries, beans, tomatoes, lettuces, cucumbers, summer squash, carrots, and broccoli.
He loved to build things and was an accomplished do it yourselfer, from gazebos, bunkies, play structures and tree houses to custom shelves from live edge maple, pine kitchen cabinets and bird’s eye maple countertop. He was a handy plumber, electrician and repairer of all things. In fact, he never bought a new item unless the old one could no longer be repaired.
When he visited family, he was the temporary handyman, noticing and fixing wobbly door handles, gates, taps, toilets, and anything else he saw that needed adjustment. He rarely put tools away where they belonged, perhaps hoping there would be something to adjust again soon. He tilled and weeded his mother-in-law’s gardens whenever he visited.
Some of his best memories were of trout fishing with his cousin, Dave, bringing home a creel of brook trout to be pan fried and served with Sandy’s freshly made rolls.
Fred was a low key but dedicated hockey dad. He did not ever miss a game or practice – often the only parent standing outside in the bitter -40 degree Winnipeg cold – cheering and supporting his son’s team.
Fred loved to cross country ski in Kananaskis Country. Then he turned to alpine skiing travelling to Lake Louise, Sun Peaks, Fernie, Banff, Lake Tahoe, the Vail Resort in Colorado, Upper New York state, Vermont, Maine, New Brunswick, Quebec City, until finally, his last skiing days in Austria at and around Kitzbuhel.
Fred was a thirty year member of the Winnipeg Vital Words Toastmasters Club, earning his ATM and savouring a Junior’s fat boy burger and the world’s best french fries before the Wednesday meeting.
Fred was born on May 4, 1949 in Wolfville, NS. During his childhood he lived in many places, including Port Hope, ON, Conway, MA and Boston, MA, but often found himself spending a part of his summer in Carleton County with his extended family. He graduated from Boston Technical High School in 1967. One of his proudest days was becoming an Eagle Scout. From high school he went to Queen’s University in Kingston, ON. He studied Civil Engineering and graduated with a B. Sc., Applied Science (Civil Engineering) in 1971. He remained at Queen’s to earn a Master of Science (Eng.) Civil Engineering in 1973. He began his 37 year engineering career with the New Brunswick Department of Highways. He worked out of Fredericton designing roads, inspecting accident locations and suggesting solutions that would improve road safety. In 1980, he moved to Winnipeg, MB to work for the City as a Streets Transportation Engineer. The project he was most proud of was the construction of the Main and Norwood Bridges. His portion, the streets, was completed in four years and four months. This was planned to be a four year project that was delayed by near record Red River flooding in 1996 and the the Flood of the Century in 1997. He loved his job and was very good at it. His dedication to the Engineering profession as a craft and his unrelenting standards inspired his daughter to study engineering.
Fred leaves to mourn his wife of 51 years, Sandy; his daughter Andrea, son-in-law Dan, granddaughter Kate, and grandson Ethan; and his son Chuck. His brother Chris, and wife Ju, and his sister Caroline are also mourning his passing. His mother-in-law Bubbles, and his brother-in-law Ron and wife Nicole, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors are left to mourn. He was predeceased by his father Judson, and his mother Marion.
The family is deeply grateful for the care and support Fred received in this last difficult year. From neighbors and friends to the staff in Oncology at SJRH and URVH, and finally his last week in 2East and ICU at URVH, each and everyone of them did their all to ease his burdens. Many people will have not had the opportunity to say goodbye because the decline in his health was so swift. Be assured that he heard your heartfelt wishes for recovery.
Cremation has taken place, there will be no funeral. Family will celebrate his life in a small meaningful way. At an appropriate time, you might raise a glass in his memory.
Donations in Fred’s memory can be made to the charity of your choice.
A life well lived is too short. May he rest in peace.
