Freda May Skene [nee Matters] of Penticton, BC died Monday 10 July 2023 at the age of 94 years. She was at her home at the Hamlets with her daughter Gail by her side and the nursing staff keeping her comfortable and peaceful.
Freda was born to Letitia [Hopper] and Frederick Matters. She was predeceased by her husband of more than 70 years. She is sadly mourned by her four children, Karen, Gail, Pam, and Doug (& Piera), grandchildren Kelly, Nicole, Jordon, and Kim, great-grandchildren Kiely, Cailin, Miles and Austin, great-great-grandson Banks, and her sister Mary, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins across Canada and England.
Freda grew up in Chapleau Ontario, and graduated a Registered Nurse in London. Freda’s husband was in the RCAF, had postings through Canada and Europe. Having the same yen for travel, they vacationed through most of North America and later all around the world. Only when physical limitations truly demanded it, did they actually “stay put.”
Before returning to work when all her children were old enough, Freda kept incredibly busy. Most hobbies & habits she began during those years were continued most of her life. She sang in church choirs everywhere she lived; she sewed, canned and froze fresh vegetables & fruits, cooked and baked her way into everyone’s hearts; and she spent a long stint as a Guide Leader. Freda helped her children through skating, dancing, piano and swimming lessons, and made sure every one of them knew how to thrive once they were on their own.
Freda was an avid stamp collector, with an enormous world-wide album. She collected for others too when she found out the Leper Mission raised funds with used stamps. She collected from all kinds of people and sent Grant to the Post Office with large parcels.
Freda excelled in many areas of nursing over the years, until she retired after 10+ years of surgical nursing in the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Of course she was “Mom” to all the teams she worked with.
Freda and Grant wintered in Texas for a couple of decades reveling in sun and warmth. But when they left Ottawa, they chose to live in a small town in much colder northern Alberta, where they still flourished outdoors. The Okanagan Valley was their dream retirement locale, retirement meaning when they were ready to travel a little bit less.
Funeral service will be held at St Savior’s Anglican Church in Penticton on Tuesday 18 July 2023 at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice. Any medical field needs or an outdoor activity need (like the Trans Canada Trail) would find you in alignment with Freda’s dearest concerns.
