nee Bird from Peepeekisis First Nation. A.K.A Gravel
November 5th, 1937 to February 17, 2024
She was born at Fort Qu’Appelle Indian Hospital and died at St. Paul’s Lutheran Home in Melville, Saskatchewan at the age of 86 years old. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 52 years George Desnomie of Peepeekisis First Nation, her mother Christianna or Tina (Brass) Bird originally from The Keys and her father David Bird, originally from Cote but he transferred to Peepeekisis in 1911. Her mother and father in laws; Vera and William Desnomie. She was pre-deceased by her 9 older brothers; Robert( Theresa), Charlie (Rita), Gerald, George and Harry (Margaret) of Peepeekisis First Nation and one sister Emily Bellegarde-Desnomie as well as David, Stanley, Albert and Jack Bird who died in infancy . She was pre-deceased by her daughter Sandra “Bush” Desnomie and her oldest son Lyle Leslie Desnomie. She was pre-deceased her son in laws; Daryl Dusty O’Watch and Mel Tourangeau.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughters: Beverley Poitras, Darlene Desnomie, Theresa Desnomie-Fiddler (Richard) and Vera Tourangeau. Special grand- daughters; Kasia Joy Matiu and Theresa Sia Nanai.
Her sons; William Bill Desnomie (Tilly), Howard Desnomie (Martine) and Dez Desnomie (Joy). Tim Poitras (April) grandson who was raised as her son.
Her adopted children; Wayne Bunna Poitras (Debbie), Chief George Cote, Vice Chief Dutch Lerat and Denise Leah “Getta” Bellegarde (Lonnie).
She has 32 grandchildren, 84 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
Brother in law; Leo Desnomie (Mary) . Frank Mondeaux and special sister in laws Susie Desnomie, Bertha Desnomie, and Marjorie Farstead.
Evelyn had a great heart of kindness and was loved by many nephews, nieces, friends and neighbours. She was a good friend to many and she will be greatly missed.
Pallbearers will be the oldest Grandsons of the children; Anthony Poitras, Scottie Thompson, Anton Kitchemonia, Elton Keshane, Lima Nanai, Lyle Desnomie Jr. William Desnomie Jr. and Desmond Desnomie Jr.
Honorary Pallbearers: Ruth Keewatin, Rosabelle McNabb, Gloria Jean Stonechild, Louise Nokusis, Alma Poitras, Gladys McNabb, Noreen Nokusis Special sister in laws; Susie Desnomie, Bertha Desnomie, and Marjorie Farstead. Joy Matiu and Theresa Nanai. Sister Bernadette. All that loved her.
We wish to express our gratitude for your outpouring of loving support. The over abundance of food, flowers, calls, text messages, expressions of love and concern and prayers in our behalf have strengthen us during such a difficult time. We thank the Creator for our amazing friend and family.
Wake will be held Tuesday February 20, 2023 at 4 pm at the Veteran’s Hall, Chief Thunderbird Center, Peepeekisis Cree Nation. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, February 21, 2024 at 11am in the same location.
