On June 26, 2023, ten days short of his 94th birthday, Fred peacefully passed away at Rosewood Lodge in Stonewall, Manitoba. Fred leaves us to join his wife, Astrid, parents, Marge and Jim, Astrid’s parents Torger and Martha, his sisters Edith (Lloyd), and Winnifred (Jim) brothers and sisters in law Gary, Lloyd, Gordon, Doug (Sherry), and Dorothy (Ken). Left to cherish his memory are his children; Randy, Trevor (Michelle), Trent, and Pat Simonson, his grandchildren, Paige, Nevada, Bob, Dawson, Brody, Lucas, Payton, Charlie, and Kennedi, brothers in law Ted (Joy) and Carl (Edie) and sister in laws Betty and Peggy. And special to him, his many nieces and nephews.
Fred was born on the JP Ranch in Woodlands, Manitoba on July 6, 1929 and spent his entire life as a cattleman on the farm, until he suffered a significant stroke at the age of 91. Fred lived his remaining years at Rosewood Lodge in Stonewall.
Fred married Astrid Simonson on July 5th, 1966 and together they raised their family on the farm in Woodlands, Manitoba. Fred was a hard-working man dedicated to his farm and the way of life that came with it. Outside of family, there was nothing he loved more than working with cattle and putting up hay. There are very few people left on earth, who can say they farmed using teams of horses to operating tractors with air ride seats and computerized technology (even though he didn’t use the technology), but Fred did. His stories from back in the day were the best, and will forever be treasured. Fred farmed side by side with his father and then with his son, Trevor, on their cattle farm until the day of his stroke in 2020. Fred was a simple and kind man, he loved his meat and potatoes, rye and Pepsi, coffee and toast, and a good visit with friends and family. Although Fred’s passion was farming, he was also an exceptional athlete and hunter (best shot in the land). His love of hunting, baseball and hockey was passed down to his children and his grandchildren. Those who knew Fred well, knew that his farm and his family were his sole source of pride. If you were lucky enough to have sat with him over a rye and Pepsi, you would quickly see this passion. He bragged about the accomplishments of all his children and grandchildren, he would light up when he spoke of them.
In lieu of a formal service, we are asking friends and family to raise a glass of whiskey and toast Fred’s well lived life and remember him in a way that is special to you. If you so desire, make a donation in Fred’s name to Woodlands Rec Club or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada. Fred’s family would like thank the amazing staff at Rosewood, who took exceptional care of him over the past three years. Special thanks to his niece Dawn whose regular visits added so much happiness to his life.
