Fred Johnston Obituary
C. Fred Johnston passed away at the Fairmount Nursing Home in Kingston, ON, on August 18, 2024. He was born on Feb. 2, 1936 in Sudbury, Ontario.
Fred will be deeply missed by his wife of 67 years, Joyce nee Longul; his children Cameron, Robin, and Kara; his grandchildren Meghan, Rebecca, and Lila; his grandson-in-law Erik, and by the families of his dear sisters Lorene and Jackie.
Fred and Joyce moved to Kingston, Ontario in 1968. Fred taught at the Faculty of Education at Queen’s University for 25 years. His life was greatly enriched by his professional friendships and the relationships he developed through his involvement with BRAC in Bangladesh.
Fred’s passion in life was canoeing and kayaking. From his days as a young paddler at Sudbury Canoe Club, to rejuvenating the Cataraqui Canoe Club in Kingston, to Commodore of the Canadian Canoe Association, and his ongoing involvement in promotion of the sports at an international level, the sports defined him. A passionate historian, he authored the Canadian Book of Champions and his lasting contribution is his massive Canoe Kayak Canada collection at the National Archives of Canada.
A Celebration of Fred’s Life will be held at James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd, Kingston (entering from rear parking lot doors) on Oct 5, from 1-3 pm with music and story sharing. For those who wish, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Canadian Canoe Museum in memory of Fred.
