Fred Edwards
Sydney
As hard as it is to believe, one of the last of the tough guys has finally left us. On December 1st, 2024, Fred Edwards, our very own Clint Eastwood, slipped peacefully away at the age of 81, holding the hand of his son and the only child with the fortitude to tolerate life in Cape Breton.
Born in Sydney to parents Albert and FairyBelle Edwards, Fred grew up at the bottom of Herbert Street and was known as a mischievous child, a characteristic he carried through his life.
He may have fudged his birthdate to join the engineering branch of the Canadian army earlier than was allowed. During this time, he also learned carpentry as a trade, which became his lifelong career, second only to his primary job of seducing women. He will always be remembered for those watery blue eyes, amazing hair and a great set of teeth (that he often kept in his pocket).
Fred was very proud of his four children, Kelley, Albert, Tonya and Tara, and to keep them from getting a big head, he didn’t often say it to them, but let others impart that information instead.
As a fine craftsman, Fred imparted a very strong work ethic to his children, a value that wasn’t appreciated by his kids when they had to spend weekends working on his construction sites. Besides his work ethic, his kids have inherited his quick wit and sarcastic humour and will miss him, as there will be no one left to argue politics, conspiracy theories or scold for inappropriate comments.
A few months before his passing he got to live out his dream to see the Blue Jays play in Toronto, during a road trip with his son – a trip that both miraculously survived.
Being a multitasker, he saved the health care system some money by deciding that rather than a trip to the doctor, he could just cut out that possibly malignant growth on his arm with a utility knife from his toolbox, reassuring his horrified children that he sterilized the blade with a lighter at the same time as lighting his cigarette.
He was blessed with beautiful grandchildren, Courtney, Robyn, Hannah and Justin and seven great-grandchildren. He was also very fond of his honorary grandson, Roy Jordan. There are also a couple of Weiner dogs and a bunch of cats that could be considered grandkids.
The family is so grateful to those who helped care for Fred in his last year, particularly Gillian Pettipas, Leanne McCarthy, Stephanie Wall and John Pierre. So much kindness came from life-long neighbor, Jason Watson.
He is survived by his family, including two sons-in-law, Will MacDonald (Tara) and Jamie Playfair (Tonya) and Albert’s partner, Gillian Pettipas. He leaves behind his beloved sisters, Loreen, Lily and Lea.
He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Walter and Brian; third wife, Carol MacDonald; and the mother of his children, Cheryl.
He will also be missed by many, including his friend and companion, Rita MacNeil-Weatherbee.
One of Fred’s favourite things was to be outside in nature, whether fishing on the shores of the Bras d’Or or hunting that elusive buck that he always “almost got”.
Fred Edwards enjoyed a tall tale and an even taller beer, often partaking in both at the Steel City. So it is only fitting that a celebration of his life will take place there on his birthday on September 16, 2025, following inurnment of his ashes which will be laid with his parents at Hardwood Hill Cemetery. The family hopes you will join them in raising a glass to Fred on that day.
If you wish to make a donation, please consider the Heart and Stroke Foundation or stopping by the Steel City and leaving a big tip to the servers in his memory.
