Franklin Royce Halliday
It is with much sadness that we the family announce the passing of Franklin Royce Halliday at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital on September 26, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Frank was born in Parker’s Cove, NS on July 25, 1936. He was the son of the late John and Muriel (Weir) Halliday.
Frank is survived by his wife of 65 years Shirley (Shaw); daughters Terri (Danny) Littlewood, Sydney; Lori (Douglas) Deveaux, Grand River, NS; Jann Halliday, Sydney; son John (April) Sydney; grandchildren: Royce Madinsky, Jordan (Amanda) Littlewood, Kullen Deveaux, Alexander Jeffers and partner Lauren; Nathan Halliday and Bethany Halliday; great-grandchildren: Zachary Doyle, Charlie Littlewood, Violet Littlewood and Hailey Jeffers. He is also survived by his Aunt Rosella Pye, niece Shirlann and nephew Curtis.
Frank was predeceased by brothers Wilfred and Curtis in infancy.
Frank will be missed by Shelby, his faithful dog whom he dearly loved. Shelby will miss all the table food he would sneak to her when no one was looking.
Frank started working at a young age. At 16 he left Weymouth to work for International Nickel in Sudbury, Ontario. After a short stay he returned to Weymouth to work for Digby County Power Board. On moving to Sydney, he worked for Eastern Light and Power and continued with Nova Scotia Power for a total of 31 years before retiring at age 55.
Frank was also known as the neighbourhood backyard mechanic, whether fixing or painting cars, repairing bikes for the surrounding neighbourhood. Not only was Dad a backyard mechanic, but he was also known as the “Jack of all Trades”, whether a carpenter, plumber, or electrician. He even built his own home.
In the 1960’s, Frank was an avid stock car racer at Midway Raceway, driving the well-known race car #42. In later years Frank returned to the track as part of the Pit Crew for his son John as #42 returned to the track where Frank guided his son to two championships.
The family would like to express our sincere thanks to Dr. Greg Myatt, Janice, and the girls for the care and compassion he received over the years. Thank you to the nurses and doctors of the ER, 4B and the ICU doctors and nurses for their care and compassion.
As a loyal and loving husband his last words were “I love you Shirley”.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Funeral Service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 11 am, with Rev Jackie Warren officiating. Interment will take place in Grand River Cemetery, Grand River, NS. with a tea to follow in the Community Hall.
