Obituary
Frank Jerry Tomcala, beloved husband of Laurie Tomcala, of Canora, SK, passed away peacefully at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, SK, on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at the age of 67 years.
Alongside his loving wife, Laurie, of more than 42 years, Frank will be remembered by his children and grandchildren: Ryan (Isabelle) Tomcala of Canora, SK, their children Cora, Lilyanna, Evvie, and Theodore; Greg Tomcala of Canora, SK; Chelsea (Thomas) Kraus of Grande Prairie, AB, their children, Sullivan and Harrison; Andrew (Becky) Tomcala of Canora, SK, their children, Henry and Iyla; Bryce Tomcala, Olivia Tomcala (Robert), and Elley Tomcala (Raegan), all of Saskatoon, SK; and chosen son, Nathan (Bailey) Hrynchyshyn of Buchanan, SK. Frank will also be fondly remembered by his dear sisters, Annie Tomcala, of Medicine Hat, AB, and Mary Jane Tomcala, of Calgary, AB, as well as numerous cousins across Canada, Czech Republic and Slovakia, and many friends and neighbors across the prairies.
Frank was predeceased by his parents, Josef (Joe) and Alzbeta (Betty) Tomcala, of Taber, AB; his father-in law, Kenneth (Ken) Havervold; sister-in-law, Karla Havervold; and father-in-law, Vernon (Vern) Dunn.
Growing up amidst the rhythms of irrigation pumps and a developing cow/calf operation, Frank learned the value of hard work and long hours from an early age. He was put on the seat of a tractor and eventually a combine, being told to hold the wheel steady and drive straight, though schooling always came first before chores. On many Sundays, when farming allowed, his family would road trip to the many sights Southern Alberta had to offer. Fortunate to live nearby, he also spent a lot of special time with grandparents and extended family.
As a young man, Frank enjoyed a good Saturday night out with his friends, with many road trips to the States. Frank’s success as a student allowed him to attend University and College, where he met his loving and devoted wife, Laurie. Together they started their lives on the farm, travelling locally, cheering Frank as he played broomball and curling, and they socialized with other friends and farmers. As their family grew, so did the days grow longer and fuller as they farmed with their children around them. Frank briefly played hockey in his youth and encouraged his kids to play sports, music or join the local 4-H club. Weekends meant the kids could help with the big chores, whether feeding, bedding down cows, picking up pipe or rocks, or just the Sunday drive to check the fields. Frank loved having cattle, the smell of fresh cut alfalfa and silage, the camaraderie of sugar beet harvest and shared that passion with his kids.
In the pursuit to succeed and expand, Frank and Laurie made the bold decision to relocate to Canora, Saskatchewan, leaving behind the demands of irrigation to begin dryland farming. Though the move meant leaving behind cherished family, friends, and memories in Alberta, Laurie supported Frank through this new challenge that they faced with optimism and determination. In Saskatchewan, they welcomed their children into the farming business and together they grew operations while constantly researching and adopting innovative practices. Throughout his career he enjoyed growing a variety of crops like sugar beets, corn, dry beans and faba beans. Amidst his busy schedule and multiple projects on-the-go, Frank remained a steadfast friend and neighbor, ever willing to lend a helping hand or share a chat in the yard. He was an enthusiastic, yet easy conversationalist for anyone who visited and was interested in a wide range of subjects and technology.
Frank found boundless joy in his family and recently wished to instill its importance on his kids. He took immense pride in all his children’s accomplishments and reveled in the joys as a grandparent as he welcomed eight beloved grandchildren into his heart. He took every opportunity to tease, show-off his self-assured ‘funny bone,’ and give chase to little kids through the kitchen. Frank loved to take his grandchildren on tractor rides and race them around his shop. He bragged of his grandchildren often as they grew and experienced the world around them.
Though Frank’s life was shorter than we imagined, his impact on those around him was immeasurable, leaving an indelible mark on hearts and memories alike. May he rest in peace, forever cherished and fondly remembered.
A Vigil of Prayer will be held at 7:00 p.m., Friday, March 15, 2024, and the Funeral Mass celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 16, 2024, both from St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Canora, SK, with Very Rev.
