Waclaw Franciszek (Frank) Lis passed away peacefully at home on Sunday August 4, 2024, surrounded by his family, after nearly 101 years of life.
He is predeceased by Sheila, his wife of over 65 years, whom he has missed dearly since her passing in 2018. He leaves behind daughters Teresa (Tom) Hurley and Anita (Wayne) Taylor and son Robert (Christine), as well as grandsons Joe (Vicki), Tim (Kathleen) and Matt (Nicole) Hurley and great-grandchildren Dylan, Carter, Emmett, Connor, Isabel and Gavin. Frank is survived by his younger brother Jurek, and predeceased by sisters Janka, Czesia and Irena. He will be missed by many extended Lis and Hluch family members, and by kind friends and neighbours at Centre Suites.
Frank had a long life, and in his early years survived events unimaginable to most of us. He was born in Bydgoszcz and spent his early childhood in Poland, until he and his family were forcibly relocated from their home by Russian soldiers in the early stages of WWII. After surviving 2 years in a work camp in Kazakhstan, he joined the Polish army under British command, journeyed through the Middle East and Europe, and survived the Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy towards the end of the war.
After the war, he was posted to Dorchester, England, where he met and married Sheila Watts. In 1952 they immigrated to Canada and eventually settled in Owen Sound. They found their way to Owen Sound, where Frank would become known for his meticulous tile and flooring work.
Frank’s quiet gentlemanly manner charmed his neighbours and caregivers. Their kindness in return has been so appreciated, and made staying in his home to the end possible and worthwhile. We are especially grateful to Rachael McCartney, who has been such a reliable, enthusiastic and caring helper over the years; first with Sheila, then with Frank. Along with caregivers Ashley, Lori, Heidi, Michelle and Cheyenne, who all made such a difference for Frank and his family. We can’t thank Dr. Mark Robertson enough – for his knowledge and compassion, and understanding of what was really important for Frank.
Loved by all, he was a good man and will be deeply missed.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be planned for later in the fall.
