On Wednesday, May 17th, 2023 Frank Hohman passed away at the age of 97. Frank was born on July 29th, 1925 in Himeshaza, Hungary and immigrated to Canada at the age of 6 with his parents Peter and Katharina. The family eventually settled in Mountjoy Township, where Frank would work long hours on the family farm. He developed a deep affinity for animals, particularly horses and dogs – our family always had a unique “Heinz 57” dog as a household companion. He travelled to school with his dog team, but eventually graduated to cars – his new ‘48 Chrysler being a particular point of pride. He is seen in photos polishing and maintaining his prized vehicles through the years, keeping many 1960’s classics road worthy to the note of intrigued Timmins citizens.
He met his wife to be, Gwenyth, at Tommy’s corner store near TH&VS – while buying a Creamsicle, he remarked to a friend that “that is the girl I am going to marry”. They purchased their family home in 1955 on Patricia Boulevard – the street almost completely undeveloped at the time. Their five children enjoyed a romping good recreational upbringing in the surrounding bush, trails and rock faces of the area where the TaDH now stands. Family was without a doubt his lifelong driving force.
Frank spent most of his working career as a legendary bartender of unmatched speed, competence and courtesy. He thrived in the mayhem of Timmins “gold rush” era beverage rooms, serving the thirsty working men – he was renowned for tapping entire kegs without pause until empty. His skill at the extinct art of cocktails and layered drinks was also well known at the Rose Room lounge, with some customers driving hours to sample his wares. Even in his senior years, Frank was impressing at staff parties and high velocity New Years Eve events. He was a home handyman by necessity but also mastered furniture repair after retiring from the hospitality industry.
He has outlived most of his friends but would be remembered as a stalwart, honourable, hard-working and loyal family man, raising his five sons successfully and warmly embracing his grandchildren. Shaped by post war sentiment toward his Germanic heritage and the tough times of the Great Depression, he mastered the art of “making do”. Deploying self-taught skills as carpenter, auto mechanic, plumber and all-around handyman, he maintained and enhanced the family home and vehicles – his five sons being key participants in the more ambitious (and memorable) projects. He was an avid reader and passed this tradition of learning on to his children with an emphasis on post secondary education. When he took a moment to sit, he did enjoy some TV humour such as Sanford and Son and the Flintstones. He will be greatly missed.
During his descent into the ravages of Alzheimer’s in his later years, the staff at Golden Manor worked diligently to ensure his comfort and well-being. Thank you.
Family was Frank’s life passion and solace – sharing 67 years with his beloved lifelong soul mate “Gweny”. He is survived by his sons William, Peter (Honora), Carl (Danielle) and Walter (Heather). A memorable grandfather “papa” to Brody (Jacquie), Patrick (Cassidy), Kyle (Carmen), Leah (Taylor) and Conrad. The family is blessed with six Great Grandchildren: Evander, Adelaide, Eamon, Quinn, Raven and Maria.
Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Gwen and son, Richard.
A service will be held on Wednesday, June 7th, 2023, 1:00 P.M. at Timmins Memorial Cemetery. Remembrance donations to the Golden Manor would be greatly appreciated.
