Francis Leung Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Francis Hok-Ming Leung, the patriarch of our family. He was a loving, generous man who centered his life around his family.
Francis will be greatly missed by Betty Suk Mui Ho, his wife and companion of 39 years. They married at St. Teresa’s Church, Kowloon, Hong Kong on May 26, 1984. And also by his three children Magdalene Ngar-Yung Desrosiers (Stephen), Eleanor Ngar-Lun Hicks (Randy), and Jonathan Fok-Wai; and his grandchild Elijah Desrosiers.
Francis was born and raised in Hong Kong alongside his three brothers and two sisters. Being the second youngest, he would often relay many childhood adventures that he had with his siblings in their apartment. Francis was baptized on January 5, 1959 at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Kowloon, Hong Kong. He completed high school at St. Francis Xavier’s College, where he developed a passion for mathematics and physics. He worked for the Government of Hong Kong for a few years before moving to Alberta in September 1972 to do post-secondary studies. He graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Commerce. While in university, he met some of his best friends and he really made an effort to stay in touch and cultivate those friendships as he got older.
Francis worked for the provincial government of Saskatchewan prior to finally settling down in Calgary in 1979. He obtained his CGA, CMA and CPA designations while working with the Government of Alberta: Alberta Energy as audit manager. Francis retired in 2017 after 35 years of service. Francis used to joke that he is a “G” man all his life.
Francis was instrumental in helping to bring a Cantonese-speaking priest to Calgary in 1981 and was one of the early members of the Chinese Catholic Mission. He was a charter member of the Knights of Columbus – Council 10119. He was also a founding member and later Chairman of St. Paul’s Villa, a position he held for over 15 years.
Francis spent his retirement years reading, walking, and travelling. Walking 10,000 steps per day was a quota for Francis in the pre-Covid days. He had travelled to the Holy Land, Eastern Europe, and the China Silk Road with his wife, Betty and his walking group friends.
Our family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude towards all the staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Center and Southwood Hospice for their love, kindness, and patience.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Tom Baker Cancer Centre for funding and research in brain tumour.
