PEAKE, FRANCES PATRICIA (née HEFFERNAN), passed away on Sunday November 10, 2024, in Richmond Hill, Ontario, at age 84.
Fran was born on March 31, 1940, in Peterborough, Ontario, to Frank and Rita (née Scollard) Heffernan. Fran was the loving wife of 61 years to Malcolm and mother of Angela, the late Veronica, Chris (Sylvie), and Duncan (Maryna). Grandmother to Olivia, Kassandra, Noah, and Ella. Eldest sister to Monica (Adrian), Maureen (Gerald), Betty, Peter (Theresa), Anne (Keith), John, and Carmel (Jim). Fran was a beloved aunt to her many nieces and nephews.
Fran dedicated her professional life to teaching and education. After completing an undergraduate degree in history at St. Michael’s College, University of Toronto, Fran went on to obtain a Master’s degree in education at U of T’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, specializing in guidance and counselling. She held various positions in her 40-year career, including Head of History, Head of Guidance, Vice Principal, and Principal, at elementary and high schools in both the public and Catholic school boards of York Region. In the later years of her career, Fran mentored both students and younger teachers. She was instrumental in launching initiatives that supported girls and young women to pursue studies and careers in what are now referred to as STEM subjects.
Fran was a pioneer in other ways as well. She was determined that her daughter Veronica, born with special needs, would have every chance to live a full life. Fran’s tireless advocacy and work with numerous organizations opened up opportunities for Veronica and others with intellectual disabilities to be included and engaged in all aspects of life.
Faith was an integral part of Fran’s life — along with her husband, Deacon Malcolm, she was deeply involved in the Catholic Church community, particularly with marriage preparation courses, New Beginnings courses for the widowed, separated, and divorced, and the Christian Family Movement. An accomplished pianist who holds an Associate Diploma with the Royal Conservatory of Music, Fran was organist at her parish for many years and loved playing classical and sing-along music at gatherings of family and friends.
After retiring, Fran served as Chair for Rose of Sharon, a charity where she championed supporting young mothers to complete their education so that they could pursue further opportunities. Fran’s volunteer work also included visiting with and bringing lightness to palliative-care and hospice residents with music from her keyboard. Fran and Malcolm spent many happy years travelling in their retirement, making frequent visits to family in Austria and England, and travelling further afar.
Fran passed away peacefully, in the same palliative care unit where she had once volunteered, on Sunday, November 10, with loved ones by her side.
Visitation at Marshall Funeral Home, 10366 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill on Friday, November 22, 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Mass at Our Lady Queen of the World Roman Catholic Church, 10411 Bayview Avenue, Richmond Hill, on Saturday, November 23, at 1 p.m. Interment Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 8361 Yonge Street, Thornhill.
In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Common Ground Veronica Peake Memorial Fund or Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers would be greatly appreciated.
