The Late, Great, Franny McCann
Frances Mary McCann (nee Naughton), born September 4, 1955 in Dublin Ireland, daughter of Jack and Maureen Naughton and sister to Gerard, Gabrielle, Anne, and John. Passed away peacefully on April 2, 2024. She leaves behind her three children Ivan (Shay Ayotte), Heather (Daniel Henderson), and Phillip; their father Hubert McCann, and her grandchildren Quinn, Adelaide, and Malone – all of whom she loved dearly, deeply, and fiercely. She also leaves behind her dear friends the Dilworth family and Brennan family as well as countless others who she met throughout her life and were privileged to call her friend.
When not in Dublin during her youth, Frances spent much of her time in County Meath, and County Roscommon where she found her love for the rural Irish countryside. Throughout her youth, she would seize any opportunity she was given to visit these places and the family who resided there, all of whom she held close to her heart. Throughout her life she would revisit Meath and Roscommon, sharing her deep love of these places and people with her own children.
As she grew into a young woman, Frances, the ever-inquisitive explorer, embarked on many adventures travelling to Canada, the United States and throughout Europe. During these travels, she met and befriended countless people whom she spoke fondly of throughout the rest of her life.
In the early 90’s Frances and her family emigrated to Canada and established a new life in Burlington, Ontario. During this time, Frances established herself as an independent woman with an exceedingly strong work ethic which was underpinned by her dedication to her family and desire to ensure that her children had the best possible life. She continuously sought to improve her standing in life by working several jobs simultaneously while attending night classes to progress her career all the while raising three children – a goal she accomplished.
Throughout her life, Frances instilled the values of discipline, compassion, empathy, humour, honesty, and true grit in all three of her children and those whose lives she touched. She was a strong, dedicated, loving, empathetic, wise, and gentle woman and was unapologetic for being so. She never shied away from a challenge and recognised the value of belief in oneself to achieve a goal while never negating the need to be kind and gentle in the pursuit of that goal. She was exceptionally proud of the life she had built for herself and her children – a testament to her belief in the power of hard work, belief in oneself and determination. This pride was second only to the immense pride she had for her own children. As she rightly and regularly said in the last years of her life, as a strong, independent and unapologetic woman – no regrets.
Visitation will be held on Sunday April 14, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. at Circle of Life, 100 King Street East, Dundas (additional parking at the Air Force Club). All are welcome to come celebrate our mother.
A private Catholic service will follow at 3 p.m. for family and close friends.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you kindly make a donation to Covenant House . This charity was near and dear to our mom’s heart. When driving into Toronto, she’d always ask us to take out her change purse before pulling off the Gardiner to give to «the kids under the bridge». Thanks for always thinking of others mom
