Obituary
Frances Elizabeth Farmer, 71, of Nanaimo, British Columbia, died peacefully on October 11, 2023, with her nieces by her side. After a long, hard fought battle with breast cancer, the clouds parted as she passed and a beautiful, sunny day emerged.
Frances was born in North Vancouver to Hugh and Jean Farmer on April 25, 1952. She is predeceased by her parents, Hugh and Jean Farmer (Nicholson), her sister Catherine (Don) Mounce, and her brother Allan Farmer. She is survived by her nieces Kirsten (Erik Benediktson) Mounce and Meaghan (Shaun) Tadei and great nieces Eva and Lena.
Her family moved to Duncan when Frances was three years old and enjoyed life on Vancouver Island. Some of her fondest family memories were spent during the summers enjoying their cabin on Mudge Island.
Frances graduated from Cowichan Secondary School and then started school at Malaspina College. In her early 20’s Frances moved to the Yukon to work and see the sights. She returned home to Vancouver Island to work two summers at Yellow Point Lodge – a place she would love returning to as a guest later in life.
After more travels through Europe, Frances settled in Kitsilano. She completed a Hotel, Foods and Management course at BCIT and took several other courses in landscaping and horticulture. She worked and travelled over the next 13 years and eventually settled in Nanaimo. Frances was employed by BC Tel for a short time and then BC Hydro, where she enjoyed working for 26 years until her retirement in 2014.
Frances was passionate about animals, adopting a dog and several cats throughout her life. She spent many dedicated hours making crafts and cards to sell with all proceeds going to the Nanaimo SPCA.
She loved being out in nature and took great pleasure in walking on Nanaimo’s waterfront and around Buttertubs Marsh near her home, viewing wildlife and taking photos. She also enjoyed drumming, tai chi and hiking, and met many great friends doing these activities.
Frances was incredibly thoughtful, kind to everyone, and generous with her time. She adored her neighbours and friends and was part of an incredible community of people. She always had time to talk with a neighbour or say hi to a dog walking by.
During her final months, Frances was amazed by the care she received each time she went to the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. In May 2023, Frances moved into Dover House Senior Care Home and took great pleasure in being taken care of and having meals cooked for her.

While Frances did not wish for a formal service, her family would like to hold a casual gathering to celebrate her life. Please join us on Sunday, November 5 at the Rugby Club in Nanaimo (6700 Dover Road) between 1:00 – 3:00 pm. Coffee, tea and snacks will be provided.
