Floyd Eldon Patterson Obituary
Floyd Eldon Patterson died September 30th, 2024, age 90. A respected CKWS broadcaster, Kingston community leader, city councillor and gardener, Floyd was a loving husband to Eileen for 70 years, and a devoted father and grandfather.
Floyd nurtured and grew everything he could dream of in his beloved city of Kingston, Ontario.
For over 40 years, Floyd reported for media outlets including The Telegraph, The Globe and Mail, The Whig Standard, and his second home, CKWS Radio and Television. On his “Hotline” radio call-in show he introduced South-east Ontario to prime ministers, artists, and activists, including Pierre Trudeau, John Diefenbaker, Flora Macdonald, Lorne Greene, Willie Nelson, and Bob Hope. On “Community Journal”, his editorial writing and human interest storytelling captivated CKWS TV viewers and celebrated their own contributions to Kingston and area.
As a journalist and News Director he hosted election coverage and covered Canadian events close to home-including the 1971 Kingston Penitentiary riot-and also traveled to Cypress, Nicaragua and Israel following the Camp David Accord to report on the work of Canadian solders overseas. He both held the camera and anchored the news desk, a passionate defender of democracy and equality. He was a born newsman.
Floyd invested himself in Kingston. A lover of heritage and innovation in equal measure, he juxtaposed these forces as City Councillor for Sydenham District from 2003 to 2006. He held too many positions to list: each role built something new, or protected something old, or achieved both at once. He served on the boards of the Cataraqui Cemetery and The Kingston Heritage Foundation. He sat on committees that built new libraries and unraveled “town and gown” challenges at Queen’s University.
There wasn’t a dunk-tank or a cook-off he wouldn’t partake in if it raised money for a good cause. He rang the bell for the Salvation Army Christmas Drive every year in front of Canadian Tire.
His heart’s true purpose was his life-long love story with Eileen. Married in 1954, their romance was central to his life. She survives him and profoundly misses his energetic, curious and informed presence. She was his home and he her adventuring knight. Both originally from Brockville, they explored southeastern Ontario in the family Buick or bowrider. They fished, watched the birds, and raised a family, together creating a life well lived.
Floyd was a homeowner and a dedicated gardener, producing bold masses of beautiful blooms that started as seeds in his basement each January. Colour and nature didn’t just have a home here, they had a party. His wild garden strewn with clay pots, cascading flowers, and climbing vines inspired eleven early paintings by Canadian artist Sharon Thompson, in a series titled “Floyd’s Garden.”
Rarely seen without a camera around his neck, Floyd made thousands of images of flowers, cardinals, nuthatches, butterflies, and goldfinches. In Floyd’s world, each view was new; there wasn’t a goldfinch or a monarch butterfly that wasn’t worth a photo. Where the rest of us saw uniformity, Floyd saw an individual worthy of its own moment in the limelight. This was the special quality you felt when you spoke with him. It is also what made Floyd a great journalist, storyteller, father, husband, and community leader.
Floyd Eldon Patterson, born May 23, 1934 to Wilhelmine (Perrin) and Fred Patterson in a farmhouse parlour near Brockville, Ontario. Predeceased by his brother Mansell, sister Edna, and son-in-law Garry, Floyd is survived by his wife Eileen, daughters Karen (Garry) and Vanessa, and grandchildren Eric (Kelsey), Danielle, and Geordie. Floyd graduated from Ryerson College’s Radio Arts program in Toronto, then from Queen’s University with his BA, while working full-time.
