Florence Theresa Duval Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Florence Theresa Duval (nee White) on Sunday, May 19th, 2024 at the Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital at the age of 61 years, after a courageous fight with Lung Cancer.
Florence was born in Kippens, NL on April 22, 1963. She lived there until she was 5 years old, when her parents, Andrew and Margaret White sold their home and hopped on the train to move to Calgary, Alberta in hopes of a better life for their family. The family moved back to Stephenville Crossing in 1973, when their oldest daughter was fighting leukemia and wanted to be home in NL and Mom and Dad didn’t want her buried in Alberta. Florence then spent the remainder of her life in Stephenville Crossing, where she could be close to family. She met her husband and raised her children in our little town. In May of 2023, Florence was diagnosed with lung cancer, she took the news well and fought with all she had. She was the strongest person, she never complained about her diagnosis. The last year of her life, she took her treatments and fought hard but in May of this year, was told that the cancer had spread and treatments were not going to help her. She reassured her daughters that everything was going to be okay.
People often told me that Flo came across as someone who was «Cross» but once they got to know her, they saw that she was a very kind and loveable person, who would do anything for anyone. She loved to go to Bingo and Darts with her friends, dances at the legion and 50+ club and over the years, many shed parties were enjoyed at her house. Photography was also a love that Florence had, whenever you were in her presence, photos and selfies were taken. She loved to go for rides in the country with Harvey and search for Moose, so we gave her the nickname, «Moose magnet». Florence loved to work and socialize, she worked a day job in homecare and at the 50+ club at night, until the day before she was admitted to hospital. She loved to bake and cook. On Christmas Eve, she would be in her kitchen making a dozen meat pies and various cookies, for family and friends. Of all she enjoyed, Florence’s pride and joy were her two children and grandchildren, who were her first concern when she got her diagnosis.
She leaves to mourn: her husband Harvey Sheppard; daughters: Courtney (Brent Sharpe) and Kelsey and her puppy Atticus; Precious grandchildren: Claire and Connor; her sister Elizabeth (Kevin) Bennett; brother George White; 7 brothers in law; 6 sisters in law,; niece and god daughter Brandice (Scott) Blanchard; nephew Brandon Bennett; co-workers: Jennifer Hinks, Cathy White, and Mathia Swyers; Owners of 50+ Club Harvey and Rita Gale; her childhood best friend Carolyn Anne Steele; and many other family and friends, there are too many to mention.
Predeceased by: her parents Andrew White in 2017 and Margaret White (nee Curnew) in 2007; her sister Mary Ethel Curnew who passed away in a car accident in 1959, at the age of 15; and sister Amelia Jane White who passed away in 1973 at the age of 12.
The family would like to thank Dr Lamswood and all the staff at STRH for all their care and compassion during Florence’s illness and hospital stay.
Following Florence’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
As expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, donations in Florence’s memory may be made to the Bay St George Sick Children’s Foundation.
