Florence Elizabeth Shipley (Sept. 27th, 1924 – June 15th,
2024)
It’s never easy to say goodbye, even at
99.
Florence «Flo» Elizabeth Shipley made her
journey home on June 15th, 2024, at Shiretown Nursing Home at the age
of 99. Flo wrote the most amazing life story. Born and raised in
Abercrombie to the late Clarence and Helen (Ellen) Dunbar, at the age
of 18 she set sail to England at the beginning of the Second World War
to be with and later marry, Jack Vince. Years of Air Force life
allowed Flo to live in various parts of Canada where she made many
lifelong friends. Years later, life changed as it can, and Flo moved
to Halifax. This is where she met Gerald «Gerry»
Shipley. They married in Hawaii and spent many years traveling the
world. Flo was a true lady. She was always dressed up, hair was
curled, makeup and jewelry on and nails perfectly shaped and painted.
Flo’s biggest part of her story was the connections that she
made with people. Whether it was a visit, a phone call, a card or a
kiss and a wave goodbye, you knew she cared. She always made sure to
stay in contact with those she met over the years and she cherished
every one of those friendships. Her last few years were spent at
Shiretown Nursing Home where her son, Fred, visited almost daily as
their bond was exceptional. Flo made many more heartfelt connections
with the staff who took great care of her.
Flo is survived by her son, Fred Vince (Trudy);
granddaughters: Hayley Finley (Trevor) and Jodi MacIvor (David);
great-granddaughters: Gracie, Hannah and Emma; great-grandson, Jack;
step-grandson, Justin DeYoung (Shannon) and step-great-grandchildren
Olan, Willow and Cullen; sister-in-law, Alberta; several nieces and
nephews and many dear friends.
Flo was predeceased by her husband, Gerald Shipley; sisters:
Lydia McChesney, Georgina Connors and brother, Clarence
«Pat» Dunbar; brothers-in-law: Stewart Connors and
Lolly McChesney; several nephews and her great-granddaughter, Molly
MacIvor.
There will be no service as per her wishes. Cremation has
taken place and a family committal service will be held in the
Abercrombie Cemetery.
In memory of Flo, please pick up the phone to call someone,
send a card in the mail or sit and look someone in the eyes and have a
conversation with them. These are the important things that will be
cherished forever. Arrangements are under the direction of
R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow.
