It is with heavy hearts that the family of Florence Antoinette Cameron (DeGirolamo) announce her peaceful passing on September 5th, 2023, at KLH, Nelson, BC.
Florence was predeceased by her husband Jim and partner Eric Erickson. She will be dearly missed by her children Rick (Linda), Jeanne and Michael (Carrie), grandchildren Scott, Heather, Katie, Justin, Alex, Candace and Jess and great grandchildren Veronika, Adam, Nicola, Charlotte, Edouard, Alexandra, Abigail, Evelyn and Charlize.
Florence (Flora) was born on June 13, 1930, in Nelson, BC. She enjoyed a wonderful childhood growing up at Mountain Station and being the youngest of 8 children she is the first to tell you she was spoiled by them all. She is predeceased by her parents, Mike and Emilia DeGirolamo, siblings Charlie, Alfred, Johnny, Eda, Mary, George, and Georgina. Auntie Flora loved keeping in touch with her many nieces and nephews and enjoyed knowing about their families.
She always wanted to be a hairdresser and at the age of 16 moved to Victoria to take her training, returning to Nelson to start her career. She met the love of her life, Jim Cameron, a former member of the Canadian Air Force and then farmer from Saskatchewan. They married on November 11, 1950, and moved to Jim’s hometown of Wartime, Saskatchewan. Flo easily settled into the small-town life where they enjoyed farming and raising their three children. They were an active part of the community including curling and square dancing and made many life-long friends. She always said living in Saskatchewan was the best 18 years of her life. Unfortunately, Jim passed away in 1967 after a short illness and she made the difficult decision to move her family back to the family home in Nelson to be close to her family. She then returned to school to renew her hairdressing license and went back to work full time. Flo eventually owned her own busy hairdressing salon known as the Magic Mirror. She eventually sold the business but continued to do hair well into her 80s.
In 1994 she met Eric, and they enjoyed the next 28 years together travelling, camping and cruising, often with her dear cousin Lorraine May and her partner Red. One highlight trip took them all caravanning to Mexico in their motorhomes led by nephew Lorne and Anne DeGirolamo.
She was always an active member of her community both in Wartime and Nelson, being a member of the Legion and local curling clubs, volunteering with Jubilee Manor, Meals-on-Wheels, donating many knitted items to the Hospital Auxiliary and involved in many activities including competing at the BC Senior Games.
Family was always the most important part of her life. With her cousins Lorraine May and Rena Bragagnolo, they spearheaded several family reunions bringing all of the families together. She also reconnected with her Mother’s family in Brazil and enjoyed a memorable trip with her sisters Eda and Georgina and cousin Lorraine to meet all of that family.
Mom had a great sense of humour, was very dynamic and social, always having an open door, a smile, and a meal for everyone. She was an amazing cook and among other things was well known for her biscotti and pizzelle. She also kept up with the times being technically savvy, maintaining her own affairs online and connecting frequently with family and friends through Facetime and zoom.
She was a loving Mom, Grandma, Nona, Auntie, and a dear friend to all that knew her and will be dearly missed and always loved.
Her religion was also very important to her and her Patron Saint, Anthony, was with her throughout her life.
