Florence Anne’s Obituary
Florence Anne Wood, 89, left us on February 17, 2024 after a long battle with dementia.
It would be wrong to say that Anne lost her battle with dementia because she never stopped fighting. When anyone else would have broken, mom struggled to the end to maintain her independence and spirit. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance truly looks like. Just because she is no longer here, it doesn’t mean she lost her fight.
Anne leaves behind Patsy (Evan) Campbell, Rhonda (Paul) Burbridge, Greg (Karen) Wood, Wendy Wood, 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She can now join with her son, Scott Wood, her partner (John Guy) and her parents (Hazel and Gordon Wilson). Anne is survived by Carol and Sheldon Ottman, Ruth McArthur, John Paskaruk and Kathy and Chuck Morley. Don and Iva Wilson, Jean Parkaruk, Ken McArthur and Harry Wilson pre-deceased Anne’s passing. Anne will be laid to rest next to her mother at the Copetown Cemetery in Copetown, Ontario.
Anne grew up in Lynden before spending most of her working life in Brantford. Working as a switchboard operator while studying nursing, Anne began her friendship with Norma (Raymond) Franklin where they both boarded on Terrace Hill. This friendship continued after they married and began to raise their families. Many evenings were spent at each other’s homes watching hockey and playing cards or scrabble.
Anne was blessed to have two loves in her life. She married Harvey Alan Wood in June 1953. They worked together and raised their family of five children. After their divorce and many years of building a life for herself, she met John Guy. With John, she showed Belgian horses, travelled with Hazel to visit Jean and John Paskaruk in Florida and attended many annual Fiddling Jamborees hosted by John’s brother (Jim Guy) in Carp, Ontario.
Days and years were filled with work, raising her family, building friendships and, like her mother, serving as Worthy Matron with the Order of Eastern Star. When Anne retired from the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation office in Brantford, she took the opportunity to give back to her community by volunteering.
One of the joys in her final years was reconnecting with her brother, Don. They enjoyed many days walking the halls, attending the music events and eating ice cream – just spending time at Tranquility Place. Understanding her disease, she fought hard to share memories with family before they faded away from her memory. We were blessed by these moments of clarity and love.
Her last days were spent in the presence of family. We want to extend our most sincere appreciation for the dignity and care that the team at St. Joseph’s Long-Term Care brought to this experience. From the fresh baked muffins that the kitchen provided during the final days, to the comfort provided by the nursing team to the respectful end-of-life care that the PSW’s brought to her end, we could not have asked for a more dignified environment for our mother’s passing. Thank you is not enough, but the best words we have to express our feelings.
The family wishes to invite you to join in the sharing of memories at a celebration of life to be held in the Spring. The website will be updated once a time and a place for the Celebration of Life is confirmed. Donations in Anne’s memory can be made to the Crossing All Bridges Learning Centre where their work was strongly supported by our brother, Scott, prior to his passing.
