Hicks, Fern Irene – It is with both intense sadness and joyful Christian hope that we announce the peaceful passing of Fern Irene Hicks (nee Bonter) at Extendicare Lakefield on Friday, December 30th, 2022, after a long fight with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in Vancouver, BC Fern was in her 83rd year.
Dearly loved and missed by her husband of 63 years James “Jim” Hicks, daughters Karen Hicks (Dave) and Wendy Hicks. Grandchildren Sarah Hicks, Caroline Hicks-Casey, Nicole Hicks-Casey and Matt Hicks (Brandi). Great Grandsons Grayson and Wesley Hicks. Dear sister of Edward Bonter (Shirley), Lyla Ritter (Karl), Raymond Bonter (Debbie) of B.C and John Bonter of Sask. Beloved aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by parents Wesley and Irene Bonter and Great Grandson Liam Hicks.
Fern was a Board member of the Peterborough Alzheimer’s Society for almost 25 years. She enjoyed her work as Personal Secretary and Executive Assistant to Senior staff at both the City of Peterborough and Peterborough County.
Fern was a member of the Peterborough Free Methodist Church where she served in many capacities over the years. She had a beautiful voice and sang with the Jubilaires choir. Fern had a heart for helping others and was especially in her element when hosting friends and family.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 7th from 12:30 – 2 PM at the Free Methodist Church, 450 Lansdowne St E., Peterborough. A Celebration of Fern’s life will be held at 2:00 PM, with a reception to follow.
Donations to the Peterborough Free Methodist Church or Alzheimer’s Society would be greatly appreciated by the family.
Special thanks to the staff at Extendicare Lakefield who provided such a caring environment for Fern for the past 7 years.
