WAYE, Mary Evelyn
Sydney
With broken hearts, we, the family of Mary Evelyn Waye, would like to announce her passing on Tuesday February 28, 2023.
Born in Sydney on June 7, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Nigel and Mamie (nee Shibib) Holbeche.
Evelyn was the wife of Merlin “Joe” Waye for 68 years. Together, they raised six children. Mom, who was ahead of her time, would instill in us, that we could do anything that we put our mind to. She had many, many interests of which she was self taught. She was a master seamstress, who started out as an 8-year-old, sewing clothes for her dolls that progressed into elaborate wedding gowns and everything else wearable. Evelyn embraced crafts; needlepoint, knitting, crochet and amazing heirloom quilt work. She did furniture refinishing and upholstery along with beautiful stained-glass work. Small in stature, you’d never see her without her high-heeled shoes. “A woman can out work a man any day” was what she always said, and she humbly proved it day after day. Along with the fore mentioned interests, Evelyn did amazing carpentry work. She built her own kitchen cabinets and did ceramic tile flooring. Along with laying new hardwood flooring throughout her home (while in her 70’s). Her door was always open for all to enjoy her fantastic cooking and baking. No challenge was too big.
Evelyn is survived by her husband Merlin “Joe”, her sons Joe (Janice), Sydney, Nelson, at home, Martin (Crystal), Glace Bay, daughters Jill, at home, Jacqueline (Thomas) Petersen, Calgary, AB, grandchildren Misty Halloran, Nigel Halloran, both of Calgary, Emily Evelyn Waye (Stephen) MacSwain, Charlottetown, Joseph (Jessica) Waye, Sydney and Brooke Rose Waye, Halifax, greatgrandchildren Stella MacSwain, Rose MacSwain and Georgia Waye, sisters Ellen Rose, Sydney, Diane Murchison, Sackville, NS, brothers Nigel Holbeche, Orillia, ON, George (Sharon) Holbeche, Oakville, ON.
She was predeceased by her son Nigel Waye, sister Rose Parsons, Dorothy Collins, Gertrude Moore, Betty Raeburn and brother Arthur Holbeche.
We, the family of Evelyn would like to thank the An Cala, Palliative Care Unit at the CBRH, especially Dr. Aboud and the caring and compassionate staff. Along with Dr. Steven MacDougall for his many years of care. As well as Andree Sparling for the home care over the last 6 months and Barbara Clifford for the Meals on Wheels.
