Evelyn May McGuire (nee Calvert), born in Sprucefield Alberta, passed away after a brief illness on October 6, 2023 in Kamloops B.C at the age of 89. She leaves behind her four daughters Lorna Shermack, Connie Audet (Serge), Stacy McGuire (Todd Averill) and Julie McGuire, her sister Jessie Stalls as well as nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband John McGuire, her first husband Roy Shermack, her son Leslie Shermack, her daughter Deborah Wanechko (Kenneth) and her grandson Jason Audet.
Evelyn grew up on a farm in Sprucefield, Alberta and she was the youngest of 12 children. She enjoyed the farm life and school, but when her mother moved to Edmonton Alberta and bought a home there, Evelyn in her early teens went to live with her mom and helped her to look after foster children that her mom took in. Evelyn loved children and enjoyed looking after the foster kids when she wasn’t in school.
At the age of 17, she married Roy Shermack and proceeded to have four children of her own with him. They travelled the province for his work eventually landing in McLennan Alberta to buy their first home, but shortly after purchasing the house, Roy was killed in a work accident. Evelyn displayed true grit by proceeding with the mortgage and finding her first paying job at the town office to afford her to raise the children. A few years later she met and married John McGuire, moved to a farm in Donnelly Alberta and they had two more children. Evelyn loved living on the farm and always had the coffee pot on and grub on the go when family and friends dropped by. She also spent time gardening, milking her goat ‘Nettie’, gathering eggs and various other chores, but her true passion was writing stories, and she always had a notepad handy to write out her thoughts, often selling stories to newspapers and magazines.
When they sold the farm in 1988 and moved to Penticton, B.C, a new journey began for Evelyn and John. They were two of the first house flippers, and when they weren’t travelling, they would buy a property, fix it up, sell it, and move on to the next one. Evelyn also loved to be active. In her spare time she enjoyed walking, bowling, shooting billiards and playing darts. She belonged to a bowling league in Penticton and years later in Salmon Arm B.C., often winning trophies.
Evelyn also laid down her pen and took up a paint brush. Evelyn especially loved painting pictures of beautiful landscapes, flowers, animals, birds and children. At Christmas family and friends loved to receive her cards, because often she would paint a card and write a personal message for them. That was Evelyn in a nutshell: a strong and practical person, with a kind and generous heart.
The family has the deepest gratitude to the staff at the Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops B.C., for their outstanding kindness and support. Evelyn was laid to rest at the Lakeview Cemetery in Penticton B.C. The family will be hosting a celebration of life in the spring of 2024. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Happy Cat Sanctuary at canadahelps.org.
