(Myra) Evelyn MacWilliam (Cook) of Summerside (formerly of
Elmsdale), PEI passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on December 14,
2024 with family by her side. Mom will be sadly missed by her five
children and their spouses: Gordon (Cindy), Leonard (Beverley), Dianne
Meunier (Rick), Judy Thompson (Ross) and Lisa Stewart (Jerry) as well
as by her three siblings: Leonard Cook, Phyllis Easter and Miriam
Cook. She was a loving grandmother to Duncan and Kelly MacWilliam;
Stuart Morley; Christopher, Patrick, and Michael Thompson; Jessica and
Robert Stewart; and to step-grandchildren Melissa Thomas; Mitchell and
Chris Furey and Jennifer DeSouza. Mom also leaves behind one great
granddaughter Saoirse Morley and 13 great step-grandchildren. Mom was
predeceased by Robert MacWilliam, her loving husband of 64 years, and
by her son-in-law Stuart Morley and by her brothers-in-law Colin
Easter, Roy MacWilliam, Erland Phillips, and Walter MacKie, and by her
sisters-in-law Donna Cook, Anne Phillips, and Jean
MacKie.
Evelyn was born on Sept. 12, 1934 in Cape Wolfe, PEI the
eldest child of Bart and Harriet Cook. Her younger years in Cape Wolfe
were filled with walking to the one-room schoolhouse, riding the
horses, helping in the fields picking out the wild mustard, and taking
care of her younger siblings. A trip to O’Leary was a big
thing so the first place that Mom went to was the library. Reading was
a favorite pastime throughout her life. Shortly after completing high
school Mom took a bookkeeping course and left the small village for
the big city life of Halifax, NS with her cousins , Myrna and Thelma
and then on to Hamilton, Ontario with Myrna. Mom and Dad were married
in Hamilton in March 1954. Soon after they were married they moved
home to PEI, first to O’Leary, then to Summerside, and
finally to Elmsdale where Dad, with Mom’s bookkeeping and
support, ran a successful service station.
They lived in Elmsdale for the next 30 years and raised a
family of five. Mom was a loving and hard-working mother. She spent
many summer days taking her kids to the West Point beach, or sometimes
to the Cape Wolfe beach, and tending to the large family garden
– with the help of a son or daughter or two, if she could
cajole such assistance. Once her children were grown Mom returned to
the workforce as an administrative assistant for PEI Housing, first in
their Charlottetown office and then in their O’Leary office
until she retired. Mom and Dad then moved to Summerside to a lovely
house on Weeks Drive where they entertained many visits from their
children and grandkids – who enjoyed playing on giant round hay bales
in the field just behind the house or in the «secret»
basement room. Mom and Dad also had many family and friends over for a
game, or two, or three, of cards over many years. They were able to
travel some – across Canada, down to Florida, to the New
England states, and out to Winnipeg to visit Len & Bev. They
built a cottage on the shore in Cape Wolfe. They spent many happy
summers there playing cards with Anne and Jean, going to ceilidhs, and
having bonfires on the beach with the grandchildren.
For the past number of years Mom has lived at Summerset Manor
in Summerside and, most recently, at Prince Edward Home in
Charlottetown. Her family wishes to warmly thank the staff at both
facilities for their years of kind and compassionate
care.
A celebration of life and interment will be held at a later
date.
