Mrs. Evelyn Lanz of Oxbow passed away peacefully at the Arcola Health Centre, Arcola, SK. on Sunday, January 14, 2024 at the age of 94.
Mom was born on August 14, 1929 at Virden, Manitoba. During the early years of her life she lived with her parents, her two sisters and brother on a farm in the Fern District.
The school was 2 1/2 miles from home so when mom started she rode horseback & then as she grew older she walked, but in winter her dad took her by team & cutter. Mom took her public school here and in 1944 she moved to Carievale, SK. where she attended high school. It was here she learned to curl and belonged to CGIT. To provide for her room and board mom graded eggs and worked in the local restaurant at noon and after school.
In 1948 mom went to Winnipeg to attend Dominion Business College. After completing her course she worked for a few months at Swifts until her layoff in November of 1949.
In March 1950, mom started working at Western Grocers in Weyburn. It was here she met dad and they were married on June 16, 1951. Mom was kept very busy with the three daughters that arrived in three years. After many years as a homemaker mom returned to the work force, where she was employed at Woolworth’s, as the office manager, for 11 1/2 years.
Mom was an active member of the Weyburn Special Care Home Auxilliary, the Prairie Lily Club & the United Church Women. She held several different offices in all of the organizations.
In August of 2006 mom moved to Prairie View Lodge in Alameda, SK. where she spent 14 years. In August of 2020, just after her 91st birthday mom moved to the Bow Valley Villa in Oxbow where she resided until her passing.
Throughout the years mom enjoyed bowling, knitting, and watching curling. She was a very determined lady and at the age of 45 mom passed her driver’s test for the first time and continued to drive until the age of 91. Mom could be found at the numerous sporting or dance events of her grandchildren & then her great-grandchildren. She could get rather vocal at certain times. Her memory for dates and facts remained intact right to her last day. We could always count on her for information and many times we said, «Let’s call mom, she’ll know.» She was always known for her expertise in spelling and math. She learned how to navigate an iPad at the age of 80.
Mom received Jesus as her personal savior at the age of 90 and while at the Villa she was able to attend church services and receive biblical teachings. In the past few months mom’s greatest desire was to be welcomed into the arms of Jesus and take rest in her eternal home. Her prayers were answered as on Sunday the 14th of January she peacefully went to be with her Heavenly Father.
Evelyn is survived by three daughters: Jean Leduc and her children, Darcy (Vivian) Leduc (children, Nickolas, Nolan and Natasha), Shauna (Verle) Klassen and their family, Dillon Leduc (son Merrick) and Jack & Breanna LeClair; Gloria (Andrew) Bourassa and their children, Andrea (Michael) Reid (children, Jacob and Benjamin), Kristy (James) Lewko, Alesha (Robbie) Duke (children, Abbi, Ella and Jaxon) and Jesse Bourassa; Janice (Harvey) Sawatzky and family, Dallas (Tonya) Chinski (children, Avery and Clay), Waylon (Hyekyoung) Chinski (children, Jade and Damon) and Logan Chinski; two sisters, Dolores Elliott and Carole Dixon; and numerous family members.
She was predeceased by her husband, Henry Lanz; parents, Fred and Gladys Dempsey; brother, Jack Dempsey; son-in-law, Albert Leduc; and numerous family members.
A graveside service for Evelyn will be held at the Workman Cemetery (south of Carievale, SK.) on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at 1:00 p.m.
