Evangeline Laird went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on May 26, 2024, in her 90th year. Born in Toronto but raised in Northern Ireland, the Irish beauty moved back to Canada in 1956. She settled in Sarnia, ON, and joined Temple Baptist Church where she met and married the love of her life, Wesley Laird, and together raised their 3 daughters.
Evangeline (Vangie) was very active at Temple Baptist Church, joyfully serving at Pioneer Girls, the toddler Sunday School and singing in the choir for many years. Upon retirement, Wes and Vangie made a decision to divide their time between their children and invest in their grandchildren, traveling to Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Cambridge. They were blessed to spend their summers at Muskoka Bible Centre, surrounded by a wonderful community of believers in the spectacular beauty of Northern Ontario.
As the families all made their way back to Ontario, Wes and Vangie counted it a privilege to be a part of all of their lives. It was their great joy to attend many recitals, sporting events, and graduations, rarely missing significant occasions in their 10 grandchildren’s lives. They made their home in Cambridge, ON, and began attending Forward Church in 1998. Here they served in many capacities, including the Senior’s Ministry.
Not only did they love their daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren, but their extended family was also very important to them. They went back to Sarnia often for Laird gatherings and to spend time with Joan and George Moorcroft (Vangie’s sister and husband). Evangeline was able to return to Northern Ireland many times with various family members, taking pride in showing them her history and visiting with her much-loved Irish relatives and friends.
Evangeline leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. She is survived by daughters Jewel (Morgan) Senior, Gwen (Robin) Pifer, Angela (Ed) Schaefer, and her niece Linda, 10 grandchildren Nathan (Sarah), Patrick (Amanda), Natalie (Nate), Shawn (Roslyn), Mary, Stephanie (Peter), Leah (Nick), Josh (Laura), Brad, and Justin, as well as 16 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her beloved husband Wesley, her sister Joan, brother-in-law George and nephew Drew.
Our precious Mom will be remembered for her strength, devotion, humility and wonderful sense of humour. Her faithful prayers over many years have made a great impact in all the lives she touched. She was an example of how to faithfully walk with the Lord through good and difficult times and the loss of her presence here on earth will leave a huge hole in our hearts until we meet again.
A celebration of life for Evangeline will be held on June 15, 2024, at Forward Church, Cambridge (55 Franklin Blvd. Cambridge, ON N1R 5S2) starting at 11:00 a.m. with a light lunch to follow. A private family interment will be held at 2:00 p.m.
Gifts in memory of Evangeline will be gratefully accepted by Faith’s Orphan Fund (an organization that Evangeline knitted sweaters for) and Muskoka Bible Centre (where Wes and Vangie spent their honeymoon and many enjoyable summers with their family).
We would like to sincerely thank the medical team in Emerge and on the fifth floor at St. Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener, who so compassionately cared for our mother in her last days.
