Obituary
Eva Paskimin was born Eva Takakenew, her Cree name was Piyesiw-iskwêw (Eagle Woman), and she was raised in Thunderchild First Nation. Eva became a Paskimin when she married late Morris Paskimin. Her last great love was late Ivan Stromberg.
Eva was very creative, independent, and strong. Surviving residential school, the loss of her children to the system and later in death, was a symbol of her resilience. It was very trying for her to give up her independence these last few years and now she’s free of life’s constraints. Eva loved to sew and was a natural entrepreneur, sharing her craft at Powwows across the country. For many years she followed the Powwow Trail with her friends and sisters, oh what fond memories were made on the Powwow Trail. Eva’s culture was very important to her and she connected through Powwows and the Sundance. Even though Eva lived in many cities, she always felt Thunderchild was her home, and would leave reluctantly when she visited in her later years.
She loved children, and every child that came across her path she would bring them close and hold them. She always took great delight in seeing both her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was loved because she knew how to love well. She also loved a good joke or funny story and would join in with an infectious laugh that drew people close to her.
Eva has gone to join her loving parents Alex and Mary Takakenew; her brothers Sam, Gabe, Walter and David; her sisters Bella, Mable, Helen and Emma; her sons Raymond, Dean, Lyle, Alvin and Glendale and her daughters Violet, Fredeline and Shirley.
Eva will be cherished in memory by her son Fabian and daughter Starla(granddaughter Rosalie Bruneau). Eva also raised and adored her granddaughter Alyssa Paskimin and Alyssa’s four children. She will be missed by her many more grand and great-grandchildren. She is known as Kukum Eva to many far and wide. While we will miss her, we are at peace in the fact she is joined with the many that have gone before.
