Obituary
Eugene, known to his friends as “Smitty” passed peacefully at home on Thursday, August 10th, 2023, in the arms of his wife and daughter at the age of 77 years.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 56 years, Glenda (nee Reid), his loving daughter; Kelli and son-in-law; Joe Dominix, and grandson; Ethan. Also left to mourn are his sisters-in-law; Mable Smith, Kathleen Smith, and Louise Reid, and brother-in-law; Cyril Weir, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
Eugene was predeceased by his daughter; Carol in 2001, his parents; Jessie and Angus Smith, his brothers; Ernest and Cyril Smith, and his sister; Verna Weir, his parents-in-law; Ellie and May Reid, his sisters / brothers-in-law; Eileen (Lorne) Shepherd, Fern (Bill) Stevenson, Phyllis (David) Pike, and Jim Reid.
Eugene was born in South River, CBN, after teaching in several communities he married his childhood sweetheart and they moved to Springdale where he worked with social services. After several years he was transferred to St. Anthony before finally coming to Deer Lake, where he happily made his home for 48 years.
He was an avid angler on salmon rivers and loved moose and rabbit hunting. He always looked forward to spending time at camp with his good buddies Frank and Gerard. He spent many hours in his shed doing woodwork and he also enjoyed playing pool and darts with his friends and getting together for a game of cards.
Smitty was also heavily involved with Masonic Lodge, Lodge Humber for over 40 years. He devoted many hours of his time flipping eggs’ for breakfast fundraisers, helping to cook a feast fit for a king, and participating in many activities with his Masonic brothers over the years. He thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship this provides until his illness prevented him from actively participating.
Eugene, you have finally reached the end of your courageous journey with PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) and you are now at peace.
The family will be receiving family and friends at Parsons Funeral Home 63 North Main Street, Deer Lake, NL, on Sunday, August 13th, 2023, from the hours of 2-4 & 7-9 pm.
The funeral service will take place on Monday, August 14th, 2023, at 2:00 pm, at St. Michael’s And All Angel’s Anglican Church in Deer Lake, NL, with Rev Canon Jeffrey Petten officiating, with the burial to follow at the Anglican section at the Deer Lake Interdenominational Cemetery, on Wight’s Road, Deer Lake, NL,
