On Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at the age of 84, Eugene ‘Gene’ Arthur Smith went home to his eternal rest, into the arms of his Saviour, Jesus Christ. Gene was husband to Monica ‘Nola’ Smith for 58 years, father to Sheldon and Monique, and grandfather to Simeon.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert & Ena Smith, brothers George, Lionel, John, Wilfred, and Clifford Smith, and sisters Irma and Elizabeth Smith. He leaves behind brothers Allan, Stanley, and George Smith, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.
Gene was born on April 17, 1939 on the island of St.Vincent. Early in his life, he developed a love for travelling and found employment on a sailing vessel, which took him through many parts of the world. In 1964, he joined his siblings, who had migrated to the U.S., assisting in his brother Allan’s bakery, which was just getting started, before moving on to his intended destination, Toronto, ON. In Toronto, Gene reunited with his fiancée, Nola, and they married in 1965. The following year they welcomed their son Sheldon, and then 8 years later, their daughter Monique.
Gene owned a very successful auto-mechanic business for many years before making a significant career change – following in brother Allan’s footsteps and starting a bakery business with his wife. For over 30 years, Hairoun Bakery was a well-known spot to the West Indian community in Scarborough, ON and beyond.
Outside of work, Gene enjoyed playing a round of golf every once in a while, but his real passion was music. He never missed an opportunity to play his saxophone at any church or event to which he was invited.
The family would like to express heart-felt thanks to the staff at Shepherd Lodge Long-Term Care facility, who provided him with top-notch care during his stay.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held for Gene on Saturday, October 7 at Wesley Chapel Free Methodist Church in Scarborough, ON (2385 Warden Avenue). The service will begin at 11:00 am. For those unable to attend in person, the service will also be live-streamed via YouTube, which you can access via the church website: www.wcfmto.com/
