Obituary
Ethel Mary Davies
On October 30, 2023, Ethel Mary Davies (Hodgson) passed away peacefully, surrounded by love, from lung cancer. On that day, we lost a mother, a grandmother, a sister, an auntie, and a friend. She was the only daughter to Eric and Blanche Hodgson, born September 23, 1938.
Ethel grew up and attended school in Dorothy, along with her 3 brothers; older brother, Gordon, and 2 younger brothers, Donald and Douglas Hodgson.
Ethel worked at the Bank of Commerce in Drumheller before she married John James Davies in 1957. They built a life on the Davies family farm on top of the hill 5 miles from Finnegan. They had 2 children, Norma Monica in 1959 and Wesley Thomas in 1962. On the farm, John and Ethel were partners for life – they worked together and played together. She could drive or ride anything. She had a green thumb; her garden was always full of new and unique veggies – she grew purple beans, kohlrabies, cauliflower, asparagus, and huge pumpkins. She was always trying something new.
She was a beautiful seamstress and quilter, and many in the family received quilts as gifts. She was an extremely good cook; there were many family gatherings and brandings enjoyed by family and friends.
John and Ethel were great community-minded people. She helped organize many dances and functions at the Homestead Coulee Hall. John and Ethel were beautiful dancers. Ethel was Further Ed Coordinator for the area – cooking classes, sewing, and taxidermy to name a few. She was always interested in learning something new.
They sold the farm in 1999 and moved to Rosedale, where they made a new life of retirement. Ethel volunteered at the Drumheller hospital as a porter for the hairdressers for Continuing Care, and she volunteered at the Sunshine Lodge.
They spent time going to their grandchildren’s many activities (4H, hockey, baseball, and bowling). Ethel and John were involved in the Antique Car Club and were in many parades, car shows, and drives in the 1930 Model A car.
Ethel was predeceased by her husband, John; mother, Blanche; sister-in-law Elsie Burke; brothers, Gordon and Doug, and father, Eric.
She is survived by her daughter and son, Norma and Wesley; grandchildren Katlyn, Johathan, Nicole, Jaeden, and Jaycee; brother and sister-in-law, Don and Dixie Hodgson, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
No flowers please; donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be greatly appreciated.
The family wishes to express our appreciation to the staff at Sunshine Lodge, and the doctors and nurses in Palliative Care at the Drumheller hospital for their excellent care and kindness shown to Ethel these past 6 weeks.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Homestead Coulee Community Hall on Monday, November 13, 2023 from 1:00 to 4:00.
