It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ethel a loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister-in-Law, Aunt, Friend and Caregiver to many patients.
Ethel leaves to mourn her loving husband of 70 years Russell; Daughter Judy (Wayne); Son Brian (Nancy); Grandchildren – Tyler (Carrie); Chad (Jessie); Shannon (Jared); Clint (Tianna); Great Grand-Children – Wyatt, Walker, Pasiley, McKinley & Harper.
Ethel was born and raised on a farm in Dodsland, Saskatchewan to parents John & Anna Boyle. She came from a large Scottish family, brothers Donald & Bill and Sisters Mary, Jean, Ruth, Irene & Catherine. She attended Elementary School at Jellicoe School and High School in Druid, Sask and then went onto study to become a Nurse at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Her nursing took her to practicum’s in Saint Rose Du Lac, Portage La Prairie, Brandon and Ninette hospitals where she continued to study and work to put herself through school. Her work lead her to meet Russell. Once she graduated she became a Nurse at the Ninette Sanitorium for Tuberculosis Patients where she worked in the children’s building. It was then that she married Russell and raised their two children beside Pelican Lake. When the Sanitorium closed the family relocated to Brandon where she worked until retirement at the Brandon General Hospital on the surgical ward.
Ethel was a huge community supporter over her life and spent countless hours raising money and working at events in Ninette. You could always find her on her days off cooking and running the canteen at the rink and hall or helping out with the Church, Fall Suppers, Bonspiels, Bingos, Hockey Tournaments and the Town Fair or Sanitorium Annual Picnic. Ethel and Russell spent hours together raising money and helping the community to grow. After moving to Brandon this community spirit continued, and they organized and ran the annual curling bonspiel for the Brandon General Hospital and they continued to be
involved in helping out with Hockey and other sports and activities their kids were involved in. She also volunteer at the Royal Canadian Legion in various capacities.
Ethel was very creative being an avid sewer, crochet, needlepoint, painting, just to name a few. She loved creating and making things with her hands and was very helpful to Russell and her Family in assisting with carpentry and renovating projects as well. She was never afraid to take on any project no matter the size.
From a young child Ethel was very athletic and was a very good baseball player and very competitive at the annual sports days with her siblings. Later on in life she took up curling, golfing and bowling and won many trophies that she was very proud of.
Ethel loved to dance and play the piano and organ. Her and her siblings never missed a dance at a family wedding. When she and Russ had their cabin at Clear Lake you could always find them every weekend with their friends at the Big Red Barn dances followed by a sing along afterwards. Even when they became snowbirds and headed south every winter to Arizona they would meet up with new and old friends to golf, dance and attend happy hour jam sessions and sing alongs.
Ethel always had time for her kids and ensured that they had every athletic and educational opportunity they were interested in. Ethel will be remembered for her hard work, strong family and moral beliefs; and her exceptional care and compassion as a Nurse, where she mentored many other nurses and touched the lives of many patients and their families.
